Just bin it... its not worth pissing round with it... However, I am surprised it only lasted a year... I have had my 120/220 stage bowl going constantly for 3 years now and it has plenty of meat left on it.

If you are running large barrels then you can just run the last rough stage for 4 weeks then go straight to polish. When I say large barrels i mean 40 pounders. I have done this successfully in the past. The only proviso is that the rock has to be perfect and ready to go. I did many rounds of 60 grit until I had a 40 pound drum load. I then cleaned them and loaded them up with a normal charge of 60 grit and rolled them for about a month then did a clean followed by a borax burnish followed by a polish run and finished them with a final burnish. The results were pretty good.

Zinc oxide will be the problem. Try tin oxide as a final polish. Cheers Scott

Thanks Fernwood... Got a decent shine on them but they were fairly coarse grained and the mixed hardness of the material meant that didn't get a great choice when it came to submitting my 5 pieces

If those were my rocks I would keep them in stage 1 for a lot longer. I have had many rocks last 12 or more months in stage 1.

Get stuck in everyone... Give it a go. All I have done to date is wash my rocks. Moving on the 25 so will start soon after.

Yep the Feb 2011 earthquake was a real hum dinger... But some of the the 12000 odd after shocks we pretty good as well. Our original house was badly damaged by the Feb earthquake and then destroyed by an illegal repair strategy that was started on by the insurance company (the council condemned the house after we brought them in to take a look). Negotiated a settlement on that claim (only took seven years but we got them by the short and curlies) then have just sold that piece of land 8 years to the day after the earthquake. Four years into the saga we bought another house to live in in Lyttelton which has served us well. The property that we bought has the holy grail of both a huge garage workshop and off street parking so we jumped on it real quick.

Personally if my rough is to big I design a bigger tumbler đđđđ, but seriously I do. However, if the rough is too big I use a hydraulic press to split it into smaller pieces then give them a quick grind to take out the worst of the flaws then I tumble. Cheers Scott
