liveoak, I noticed the very nicely done up "minature" Buffalo drill press in the video. Was that a machine that was marketed at that size or a salesman's sample like the old cook stove models were, or do you know either way. I've run a couple of the full size Buffalo drills, but have never seen a small one like that. My compliments on your restored machinery, shows pride in workmanship.

1/4 would be ample in my opinion, I've built some double barrel tumblers, each holding ~12 lbs. of rock, 1/4 hp Dayton motor didn't even know there was a load on it.

That's quite a photo essay, and all that in a couple hundred acres. The color variety is amazing for a small area as compared to here. Thanks for the show.

Nice fix, and well explained with pics. I've replaced rubbing guides with rolling guides on tumbler frames for other people, without fail they have all said "Why didn't they make them like that in the first place."

Several people I've known use automotive water pump lube in their saw water with good result. Personally I drain and roll the blade by hand under a rag to dry it.

This is not more than an advertisement, but gives a little insight into what you have. I wish the original prices were listed.

I have one too, put pieces of rubber likely from an innnertube under the feet, no walking, and I made sure it is level. I find it works better with heavier rocks, >1pound. The polishing pad on mine lifts out, it has two identical grinding sides on the main plate. There's a weight on a threaded rod underneath, if you get a bit of hopping move it in a half turn at a time, calms the movement some.

Sundials pretty much set themselves; provided you never let the batteries go dead.

I acquired a bunch of paper backed sandpaper in with SiC cloth backed in a big box, use the paper backed on split or "thump" wheels for shaping wood. I've replaced the lining on the wheels with the shelf/drawer liner that has all the little holes in it, has worked very well. Being made of rubber, it should do as well wet as dry.

If you get to Bandon, go out to the lighthouse on the North side of the river, pet wood pieces on the beach at low tide, most aren't impressive when cut but good yard debri. There is a little track going East from the lighthouse area that goes back a short way. At low tide a fairly large flat opens up, we have found lots of wood, agate, and jaspers on that tide flat, mostly tumbler fodder but good stuff.

have a look at this: Home made barrels using PVC pipe and industrial plastic end covers, cold rolled from steel supplier or local fabrication shop, pillow blocks all over the internet; shop it, prices vary, don't need spacers if all barrels are the same size, motor 1/4 max 1/5-1/8 O.K. belts and pulleys from good hardware store or farm supply, rubber for the rods I use gas line tubing and lube with vegetable oil to help installation, not hard if you have a vise or a hole in a solid table. These things last way better than any commercial one, I've built a dozen of them. Base frames can be made of wood, works well. If I've boggled you with more questions, don't hesitate to PM me with questions. Don't know where you live but I have some finished barrels I'd sell fairly cheap. The motor on this one was given to me by the buyer, he built a "house" around it and lack of ventilation burned it up, had to replace it. These are 8"x12" barrels, I have some 6"x10" ones, hold a gallon or ~12 pounds of rock. This one has garden hose on the rods, gas line tubing {auto parts store} has proven to work better.

Got to work one night, note in foreman's daily log called in by one of the crew: "Will be late, roads bad." Phone call a little later: "Car in ditch, tow truck on the way." Later yet: "probably won't make it in, tow truck in the ditch too."

Leather for damage control/cushion? So where are you guys getting leather? I get mine mostly from garage and estate sales, old purses, boots, anything other than split leather, and cheap.

Chris Sikk, I don't use split leather, it will turn to shreds in a short time, full thickness lasts a very long time, can't say I've worn any out, yes I do reuse it.

We do a lot of petrified wood from the Northwest and have found a week of burnish after a thorough post polish cleaning gives our stuff a better luster. This doesn't hold as well with everything, beach and river agates don't improve as much. For my burnish mix I stir up cheap dry laundry soap in water to get a near thin pancake batter viscosity and I pad the load with chunks of cut up leather scraps in the 1/2 to 1" size range, about 75% rock and 25% leather. This in a large barrel, smaller chunks for smaller, say 12 pound, barrels. It is a little messy but works for us, and I do reuse the mix.
