fantastic5 Ann, your thread got a bit hijacked there, so I wanted to ask when you said polishing I took it as jewelry polishing, not rock polishing. Am I correct? If so, I would think an N-95 would be fine. Do you have a jeweler's bench polisher or do you use a Foredom with small buffs? Yes, I was referring to jewelry polishing specifically. I use both, a bench system and small buffs on my generic flex shaft. Just neither are directly ventilated. I always keep my 'fit test' N-95s from the hospital as they are clean. But I do think I want to invest in a 3M respirator. May be overkill, but I don't mind being extra safe. And I don't mind the deep dive into air quality.

Depending on what's in your flux, if you can't achieve adequate ventilation, you may want to consider a respirator for the fumes, if you do it more than just occasionally. Some metal fumes are relatively harmless, others give interesting side effects, where it's not clear, whether or not they are dangerous (silver gives you blue-gray eyes -- so you'd look like a Spice-addict from Dune, I guess?), and others can be dangerous. I'm more familiar with welding, where beryllium and cadmium can be serious hazards. I'm not sure whether those are in a lot of fluxes, but they are listed here: www.sentryair.com/blog/industry-applications/electronics-technology/the-hazards-of-solder-fumes/If you decide that a respirator is for you, I can help. Right off the bat, an N-95 would not provide appreciable protection from fumes. Thank you for the link. At work I'm the OSHA girl, but at home I've not taken the same precautions. I'm trying to be more careful about whats in the chemicals I use and what safety mechanisms I have in place. I think the ventilation is adequate. It draws the flame nicely. This is what I use to draw the air. VIVOSUN 4 Inch 190 CFM Inline Duct Ventilation Fan with Variable Speed Controller
I would like your recommendation for a good respirator for polishing. Ann

rockjunquie Are you doing silver work? That'll make a nice pendant. I took a beginners silver class several years ago at William Holland. I'm slowly setting up a bonus room for jewelry making. Its about 90% unpacked and 10% organized. I wanted to have an exhaust option for the torch. I cobbled together a few ideas I've seen online and think I have a decent system set up. It vents into the wall in the bonus room that goes into an unused attic space. I know that's not as ideal as directly venting outside. Hopefully all of that insulation will ask as additional filters. So, yes, I want to set this one in silver. Ideally, even a handmade chain with some accent stone beads. To date everything I've made since the class I've gifted. This one will be for me!

So here's what I was able to get through polish in order to meet the deadline. The next time I go through my barrels I'll probably decide not to finish a good majority of the rest for various reasons... Now to pick 5 and get them in the mail. Really nice!I I didn't get any solid reds like you did. Such a variety of color in this material.

rockjunquie I was only going by the label on the bag lol. Either way it's a huge favorite and I intend to create a setting for it (that is once my jewelry room is functional🤣).

As the winner of one of the two boxes of preforms I can finally post a finished cab. Lots of life happened between then and now. Nevertheless I'm blessed to have my new rock room functional (read messy). Brecciated Mookaite

I'm glad to have our my entries in the mail today. I stressed over these stones for too long! Here are the ones that didn't make the cut. The majority I didn't bother taking all the way to polish.

Way to go Chuck!! Those are amazing Are any Michigan natives in that batch? And the last picture looks painfully familiar, are those some of your 2021 contest stones? Mine are in Lot-O in pre-polish right now. On a personal note, I've been away from the board for a few years due to non-rock related personal reasons. Everything is settling back down for me and I'm getting my rock room set back up. Looking forward to reviewing everything I've missed the last few years. You clearly haven't done anything but raise the bar even higher than before. Ann

Thank you everyone for the birthday messages and happy birthday to my fellow 18th Aries stephan! Sorry I've been absent for several months. Not to bring everyone down, but I feel I can finally share. I am sadly in the final stages of a divorce. I will close on a new house next month, then I can remind myself of all the fabulous material I have collected over the past 10 years, when I move it into my new studio at the new house. I'm very saddened by the loss off my partner and best friend. I only hope he finds the happiness that he no longer sees in us. He turns 50 this year and it really seems like a bad Hollywood stereotypical midlife crisis movie. He went to the tanning booth this week and got a tattoo, who does this at our age? Thankfully this is not an ugly situation between us and with my promotion at work, I'll be just fine financially. In fact the house I'm under contract with has a rockin daylight basement that will make a killer studio. I look forward to getting everything set up 😁

I wasn't going to enter this year. I have an unexpected huge shift in my life and I don't know when I'll have my toys set up. Hopefully by summer, but finding a new house will take some time.
These changes are what has kept me from posting much in 2019. But I love RTH and will be back when I can.
