Stopped in at Boerne RS. Owner says they've been there 4 yrs. Great little shop, great price on grit.
She mentioned a shop in Balmorhea, said it's been there a long time. Didnt have a chance to stop in there, though.

Johnson's Rock Shop, Livingston, TX (actually 10 miles east of Livingston-follow the signs)
So on the advice of a fellow lister I visited the shop. It's run and owned by four generations of rock-hounds. The Patriarch has a personal specimen museum-purported to be the largest private collection around these parts.
OMG-I was not prepared for what they have; I honestly thought they would be a "rough" shop. It is very organized, very well kept, huge variety, great prices.
Very helpful-they want you to learn their business! You can ask them anything and they are more than happy to show you how they've been doing it for over 40 yrs.
I honestly was strapped for cash and still left with my little lunch bag FULL of goodies. I'm saving up to go back and come home with much more next time.
By the way; Turns out I know their grand-daughter and she happened to be there that day, Even BETTER.
Just a short list of what they have: rose quartz rough/by the lb, geodes, amethyst rough/by the lb., a bathtub full of tumbled rocks by the lb/each. There's two lapidary shops for cutting and cabbing, they have a tumbler and supplies area, the list just goes on and on. Oh yeah- Grandma who is 95 still makes jewelry!!! and Grandpa has a music shop!!!
It was like being in a candy store, being with family, didn't want to leave-really. You can't see it all in one day either, several trips just to cover ALL the ground. We went on a rainy day and had a blast, I can imagine how much more fun it'll be on a sunny or at least a dry day!
You've got to visit this place!!! It's well worth the extra miles.

I want one of these. I'll have to start prompting hubby to "help" me build one, he's an electrician.

Great job. Love the stone, reminds me of an old painting of a sea storm.

This week they are hunting imperial topaz in Brazil. Pretty interesting. A Jeweler, a Geologist and a Fashion Bag designer.

Just a head's up; if you can't get the pdf (I couldn't) you can contact ASI Industries-Andrew for an email copy of it. I did and it's worth reading it.
It may have solved the issue I've been having.
Thanks all for the helping hand. Elaine.
