The weather was nice yesterday, so I went over to the Holleywood Ranch to pick up some petrified wood. Called Brad to be sure it was ok, details are on his website. I was the only one out there since they moved the rock shop, but there was still plenty of wood to be found. Lots of variety, some more agatized than others. I found a lot of pieces, but only took a small piece of sycamore, and a large piece of some unidentified species. The large piece rings like a bell when you tap it. I am hoping that it is nice and solid. If so, it will end up being a large bowl.

Thought it would be fun to post some things I made from the traveling rock box. Not finished, but you will get the idea. I started to make stuff in the order box's travels. First up was material from Garage Rocker. The tumble sized material was begging to be made into beads so I preformed some. Bottom is the yellow agate from dead center of the 'tumbling rough picture below. Middle is the Bahia agate made into an eye bead, and top is the blue Botswana agate, that had black skin. These will take a ride in the vibe tumbler to get finished. A little tumbling rough
Large Bahia agates
Botswana agate, palm wood, crinoid fossil

that one was a hobo, so I had to kill it...aggressive, with a semi-venomous bite. Gets up on haunches and lunges at you.

This time of year we get some spiders that are pretty decent sized. That door trim is 4.5 inches for scale

Received the box in great condition, thank you bsky4463 Took my time going through and picked out a small piece of ocean jasper, dino bone, madison blue (which I had never seen before), gary green, and some unidentified stuff. Here is a photo of what I took I added back a bag of small but good Montana agate, a slab of Moroccan Agate, a small bag of Priday blue ice agate, a slab of graveyard plume agate, some local finds, and a few beads that I made. Pictures are dry I PM’d meviva to get their address, will be sending along ASAP

Pat yes Richardsons had great prices, a huge selection and quality material. I got a heck of a lot more stones from them than the Madras show where things were overpriced (in my opinion). Richardson's will be the first stop I make on my next trip out east. @rocks2dust we had to be selective about what we took home. A lot of it was chalky, but we did get some pieces with promise. I was surprised that it was white inside since most pieces has a redish rind. Even now my car smells like those hoppers, but now it just reminds me of some good hounding.

My wife and I went on a little road trip. I had to go to a conference in Salt Lake Cityfor work, so we drove from Oregon and hit up some spots on the way. We timed it so we could hit the Madras Pow Wow on the way back home. First we tried to hit some spots near Prineville, but it was raining, so we kept heading east. We got to Glass Buttes…still raining. Burns…still raining. Finally, we got to the dried lake beds between Burns and Frenchglen. There were huge swarms of locus with birds everywhere feeding on the masses of bugs. We drove through and it felt biblical! So many got caught in the car radiator that I had to pick them out to not overheat. The car still smells like burnt grasshopper. Anyways, we decided to do some hounding in this area, since we were stopped This is the material that we found, strange stuff, but I picked up a full bucket I made a cab as soon as I got home to see if it would polish Stopped and ate lunch near this lonely tree Then we headed south to the Oregon Nevada border and searched for copper minerals, this is a view from an old tailings pile There were a lot of green rocks around. This one was too big to get home, but I managed to break off a nice hunk. Here is a sample of what we found Intermission, salt flats at sunrise We didn’t get to hound in Utah, work took up all of my time and I wanted to catch the Madras show. We headed straight there, and got in just in time to join one of the organized digs. I have to say, they knew how to organize a crowd. Everything went off without a hitch. We went to the Friends Ranch to dig for thunder eggs. Here is some scenery. The diggings The pile And a broken egg that was too cool to leave there Then we went to the Priday Polka dot mine to dig blue ice agate One of the original Native American mines is still on site Here is a sample of the material we brought home We also went to Richardson’s Ranch, and the Ochoco Reservoir to look for rocks, but apparently didn’t take any pictures because we were having too much fun. To sum it up…we had a blast, and brought home 200lbs of rock to play with. Thanks for looking

I finally convinced my sweetie to go on a rockin' road trip. I have to drive from Oregon to Utah and back for work, and she wants to come along for the ride and do some rock hunting with me. Some ideas of places to stop: plush, graveyard point (love that plume agate), glass buttes, McDermitt and many others. I have not been to any of these places for hounding, so any advice or suggestions would be welcome. We don't have a 4 wheel drive, and this is her first time rockhounding. Of course if there are neat rock shops along the way, that would be great to know too.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions

Seems like the hardest part would be getting the brick cut square. polishing the brick. The holes not bad at all electroplated bits. Super cool! saw does all the work, but it was fiddley getting everything square. Set things to cut as slow as possible so I can start at 600 on the wheels

Wanted to try blind drilled holes for an upcoming project, so I made a tealight candle holder made out of graveyard point agate. I drilled 38mm holes about 9/16" deep. Then, I drilled a sequence of 12mm holes and chipped out the cores to remove the bulk of the material. Was faster than I thought to do this. thanks for looking

That is cool ..where did you get the stopper from local woodcraft store. there are a ton of interesting projects designed for wood turners: wine stoppers, pepper mills, bottle openers, keyc hains, etc.

well, they came out of the tumbler, and although they were shiney, the corners didn't round at all. I didn't like the shapes so I bit the bullet and rounded them all by hand, one-by-one. 3 hours later and I had these..
into the tumbler again

first attempt with a piece of carnelian from the Nahelem River. The rock is drilled with a 10mm bit to a depth of 0.75" to accept the bottom piece

I took a trip to Japan last week for work. Had a blast, even got to see some rocks. To kick things off, I left about 30 minutes extra time in the drive to the airport to stop at a city park.
Lots of folks out fishing on the river.
I walked the beach there for about 20 minutes, found some potential suspects
Then it was on the plane to Tokyo, then a short hop to Kyoto,
The golden temple
The cherry blossoms were in full bloom
Other stuff too
This is where they got the water
For tea
Interesting signs
Great food
I even came across this little road cut one afternoon and scored a little stone that I took home. I think I will use it for this month’s killer cab contest
Thanks for looking

Very nice! I have a turned wood pen that my husband's grandfather made, but I don't have a stone pen. Do you sell yours anywhere? no sales outlet yet, this is only the 3rd one I have made. maybe we could work out a trade for a wire-wrap
