Landscape Doublet – unknown agate of some kind. "Rootbeer agatized wood" with dendrites My first try at a doublet, with much thanks to the 2 Bills, brotherbill & wpotterw for gifting me the beautiful quartz that enabled me to do it in the first place. I learned a bunch of things in the process, for example: that bubbles in the epoxy glue really get magnified looking under the clear quartz, not all epoxy is remove-able with heat, some can only be ground off, (took me 2 tries ) and clear quartz shows every little scratch you didn’t know you had, as there is no pattern camouflaging it. It’s like looking at your cab through a magnifying glass, which is really what it is. Lastly, that the very best photo with a nice translucent stone & doublet top, is back lit, and so I can’t use that photo for my entry. This is another thing I learned, that taking a good photo of a quartz doublet is very difficult, as the quartz all polished up is so highly reflective. But I needed to do this, as the only slab I owned that even remotely resembled a landscape, was too thin to work with. So here’s my entry : Winter Landscape with bare trees under a cloudy sunset sky To my eye it looks like you are looking across a frozen lake at the far shore, covered in snow & bare trees.
Interestingly, in different light the clouds change color, and the lake changes to a snow bank, it’s a very interesting little cab (to me anyway).
In some photos (not posted) it actually looks like it’s snowing, which must be some refractive artifacts in the quartz. Size- 1 ½” X 1 ½” First photo- Backlit – Sweet
Entry Photos: (NOT backlit)
Thanks for the challenge - I learned stuff

That is a sweet looking lil cab. I can see the scene you described. I really like the colors of it too.

Landscape cab entry is Biggs 4x3.5” with a flat back and convex top. Vibe polished. 3. R That is a killer piece of Biggs. Great shine on that.

Realrockhound, Thanks! The UV-18 vibe does an excellent job on good material and Biggs will take a great shine. I made another longer piece at 7"(cab not shown) that is my favorite but my wife gets to make the entry decision when I make more than one.

I'm going to try to take better pictures of my cab in different lighting tomorrow. I'm just not quite pleased with how the pic came out. I know I can do better. I think you did a fantastic job I found it difficult to work. Really soft in some areas. And I can see it being hard to photograph. Maybe outside in natural light? I had the same issues. Soft in the sea scape area, and hard in the rock/land area. So made it a pain to where you had to pay great attention to your dome, I retook the picture in natural light, and the cab looks 10X better, as you see more detail and it doesn't get drowned out.

liveoak First one was about twelve years ago, Patty. Never a problem with the join and it hasn’t yellowed or discolored either. I’ve only done a couple more since but all have been easy to put together and trouble free. [Off to dig up an old P-bucket pic and dump it into Cloudinary.]

A Midwinter Moonrise in Porcelain Jasper There's nothing like trying to photograph a cab to make me see every mistake up close and personal. My first time entering one of these competitions. You guys are amazing photographers! (and lapidaries!) I had a piece of porcelain Jasper that was barely bigger than a tumbling rough. I'd sketched some "Possible" cabs into it before, but never got up the nerve to take the plunge. Thank You to whoever set this challenge! And here is the finished product! For scale, here it is alongside your garden-variety blue heeler's paw. (Was just trying to photograph with the penny, but he did insist.) And of course the rest of the dog! (He's not real clear on why we're doing any of this, but he's happy to be a part of it. He tried to eat my clay too.) I'm still new at this lapidary thing, but learning tons every time I log onto this space!

realrockhound Elizabeth says amazing, and I agree. I know how fun that stuff is to work. liveoak super nice doublet. we're thinking a "rootbeer agatized wood" with dendrites, seen stuff like that from Wasco and some other sites in Oregon. victor1941 that's some super nice Biggs RocKingRuralMo Nice porcelain and cool dog too.

Exactly the same problems which is why my cab sucked That stuff isn't easy or cheap to come by either. The photo in natural light is MUCH better. Great job

victor1941 The Biggs cab is huge and a stunning beauty! Is it the milky way in the sky?
