Definitely me. This Brazilian should have taken a high polish- I have some more work to do on it but I wanted to see if I could get a good shine first. It has more of a matte finish. Maybe a new pad, I don't know... Any suggestions?

miket, Maybe you should add more details of what wheels, and what compounds, etc you are using in order to get more helpful suggestions. I'm not saying I have some suggestions - but I know others might. Patty.... always looking for more suggestions.

I can't really say much about the wheels since the cabber came with the wheels on it. The only compound that I used was 8000 grit diamond paste. I put the paste on the pad and dipped the cab in water while polishing it- I don't even know if I'm supposed to be doing it that way....

It already has a binder in it for the diamond that takes the place of water. If you need to get a little more lube on the paste, add a drop of silcone to it.

That's interesting Robin, hummingbirdstones , I didn't know that about the silicone. Thank you for that. I have a question miket , are you trying cerium after the diamond ? The only other thing I was told & and am still learning (and forgive me, as I'm sure you already know this, as you've been grinding cabs by hand the hard way, longer than I've been doing any of it) But when I first got my cabber, I had one guy on lapidary.net tell me not to skim on the time put on the 600 soft wheel. On my cabber that's the 2nd soft wheel after the hard grinding ones. He explained that the 600 is important to get a good pre-polish, otherwise you'll never get a good final polish. Anyway, I thought it was worth throwing out there. Patty

I wonder if that's what is causing the dull finish...

I don't have a clue what my wheels are but I'll give that a shot. Something interesting, my last wheel isn't anything like the ones before it. I can't really explain it better than that, it's just not "soft."

Okay...I'm going to guess you're not spending enough time on the 600 grit wheel. Maybe I'm wrong...but I'm going to bet there's some micro-scratches that are present. I know when I'm working agates (like Fairburn or Brazilian) they won't have a "matte" finish off the 600.

Stay tuned. 🙃 If you don't have an Optivisor yet...I definitely recommend getting one. I got a cheap "alternative" off eBay and it has served me SO well. I'm able to see those micro-scratches I couldn't see with the naked eye. I go even two steps further. When I'm cabbing, I wear reading glasses, an optivisor, and look through my 3x magnifying lamp. So I'm really looking HARD for any scratches.

It was jasoninsd or someone who noted that.

I use an aerosol can of Silicone Lubricant. I spray my pad down with that, then apply the diamond paste. I was using a felt pad, but they were wearing out too fast. I've been using a canvas pad for quite awhile now. It has lasted quite well. I bought a canvas drop cloth (heavy weave) from the hardware store and just cut a circle out of it then glued it onto the disk. One cloth supplies a lifetime of canvas pads! LOL

I don't have a clue what my wheels are but I'll give that a shot. Something interesting, my last wheel isn't anything like the ones before it. I can't really explain it better than that, it's just not "soft." I thought I'd mention that the 2 different brands of wheels I have both have their grit # marked on the side of the wheel.
Of course it might be hard to read with the wheels on the unit, but just thought I'd let you know that there might be a way to double check what exactly you have.
A typical 6 wheel cabber has 2 hard grinding wheels 80 & 220 grit
Followed by soft resin bonded wheels 280, 600, 1200 & 3000.
Also one thing to also keep in mind that all of these wheels are meant to be used with water on the wheels at all times.

Someone here once mentioned using water on the felt and 50k paste, which I do. I dip the cab while I am polishing. I haven't witnessed any reason not to.
Your cabs DO look like they have that 600 matte look.
You'll work it out, I have no doubt.
