I will be strategically placing some of my pretties along the riverwalk in my home town for kids to find. There are people that currently paint things and sayings on rocks and place them along the riverwalk but the catch is they are supposed to take a picture with it post it to the community FB page then rehide it. May be a fun Idea.

A co-worker asked me about if I'd be willing to part with my tumbles, I think he said something about putting them around trees or posts, some kind of circle.
It's stupid, because they are just rocks, and these aren't even my favorites per se, but they are works of mine. Time, effort, a little bit of "craftmanship" I guess. I dunno, when he asked I was all on board. But every container I opened to see what was inside was like ripping a band-aid off lol There all sorted by type, color, etc. Each one was as good as I could get it... I know there have been other threads in similar fashion. Can't keep them all, right??
Cold feet on giving up rocks I guess. If it was Rocks I bought because they are no where near me such as Mexican Lace Agate or Zebra Jasper then I would likely say no. If it was common rocks I found out rock hunting and picked up, then I would have no problem with it because I didnt buy them.

Lumberlegs, I'm with you. My tumbles are in jars. Labelled jars, even the granites that I set about tumbling just to see if I could do it and make something presentable. I can give them away if the person loves rocks and gets stars in their eyes when they see them. I can give them to kids that are just learning and want to learn more (my nephew's six year old just made a major score, even some of my display agates). But I could never give them to someone who asked for a bunch to toss around trees. Now the rough, that's another story--I don't tumble much anymore, so I can give that away, and hopefully the recipients will share a glimpse of the finished product.

Part of why I got into tumbling is that I wanted to be able to share some of the beauty I find. That being said, if I was being pushed to give away a bunch of them, I'd take that as kind of rude unless I already proposed that. I've already given about 1/4 of my first batch away to my kids and another 1/4 to my brother and a few others to my physical therapist who was super excited to even see them. I'll be handing out rocks (only the ones I'm ok with giving away) as much as possible. Half the fun for me is bringing out the beauty in something I was lucky enough to find and the other half is sharing that with others who had no idea there was so much to be appreciated out there.

I get this because money, sure, I would say I'm maybe the opposite in some circumstances, I tend to value the things I can find on my own, they feel more unique and special to me, rather than something I bought. Anyone can buy something someone else found, but something I found myself is priceless, like a special gift I was lucky enough to find. Maybe that'll change over time (after I have more than twice as many rocks as I already have).

Oh for sure, let me just add tho that in my area in Ohio the only things I can really find are quartz, Quartzite, and Basalt. Some of it is a really cool green color but its very very common and nothing super fancy. I might feel the same as you if I could find agate, pet wood, jasper, etc for sure.

May be a fun Idea. Painted rocks with pleasant messages and scenes are special treat in my community. They're usually left as little gifts near the mailbox or front door and folks let them accumulate as sort've a "welcome " greeting. I'll try to remember to make images of one or two and post here - it's really a very nice gesture that creates a great sense of community. Some of the paintings are really skillful.
As for tumbled stones, I haven't done any tumbling in years. But I have an old stock I give to kids whenever they visit.

Keep them all! One day when I have enough, I am going to put them all in a pile and roll around in it like Smaug. Moo. Hoo. Ha!
My buddy's wife hinted about wanting mine for planters and her fish pond. It's mildly offputting because she doesn't know what she doesn't know - like how much time it takes, how few survive the process to come out nice, etc.
But on the other hand, what's a person going to do with them once you've picked out some favorites and have taken some pics?
They're also hard to turn loose of in quantity (a few or even several here and there doesn't bother me) because going in and looking at past grinds is calming, there's a zen in it for me.
You could suggest a happy medium. Point him at your favorite crushed rock vendor and show him how nice raw rocks can look with a coat of mineral oil. :)

That's a good point, I guess I was taking for granted that I have such a variety of things that pop up nearby in the great lakes. I've found so many cool and unique things from softball sized salicified stromatoporoid fossils to assorted breccia and porphyry to banded iron, chert, and chalcedony (full nodules even). I suppose once I've had my fill of those I'll spread more of them around freely (mostly I've given quartz away) and move into buying some more exotic tumbling rough, but I'm still enjoying the wonder of the rockhounding adventure I'm able to have on my own without too much travel.

It was a decision of I really didn't have enough and I don't think they realized how much time and effort I'd put in.
I did suggest to them banded hematite for something different the neighbors wouldn't have

This past Halloween, I gave all of the dreadful results of my first couple of years or so, away to the kids I know, divvied it up among them, instead of giving them candy. They LOVED it, and I decluttered a corner of a room. 25ish pounds of tumbles. In another thread I mentioned I work with kids: among them all I have daily contact with 5 very serious, young, self-professed rock hounds; including a Kindergarten aged girl. This fact was confirmed to me by her Mom and her Grandmother both. I always have a few polished rocks with me, in my pockets, and give a few away each week. I talk rocks with all these kids, teach them stuff as best I can, sowing the crop of next-generation rock hounds. (I am actually considering putting a proposal together to start an after school rock club at the local middle school as well. For part of the school year.) Sorry for ranting, I get like this sometimes, drifting off course. Now, if someone asked me for my polished rocks, a lot of them, maybe I’d part with some, but I think there are better homes for tumbled rocks in a general sense. Than around a fence post I mean. Frankly I think I would be somewhat defensive and a bit turned off by the idea. But that’s just me.

I loooovvve that idea, geoff59 ! I'll have to do that someday when I'm overrun with polished rocks! I think I'm slowly getting there because I'm storing some small boxes in the closet now, and no one is enjoying those. So, I probably do need to give some away. I just need to have the person I give them to sign a contract that they will not jut throw them out in their yard. LOL As for me, I would not be able to part with the prettiest rocks I've bought, but I also would have a hard time parting with tumbles that I found myself. Actually, those are more special to me. I can often remember exactly where I was in the yard, or on my gravel road, or my exact location on the river when I found a particular rock. And it's all mostly banded chert and chert nodules here locally, but I love finding both.

I promised to post an image of one the painted rocks some thoughtful (and talented!) neighbors leave anonymously at doorsteps in my neighborhood. It's really a pleasant and heartwarming practice that makes the pleasure of living here even greater. This "free rock" showed up (along with several others) a couple of months ago:

I always have a few polished rocks with me, in my pockets, and give a few away each week. About a decade ago, I inherited a relative's massive coin collection. After deciding what to keep (more than my wife thought that I should) and what was worth selling (less than my wife thought that I should), I found that I was left with a large quantity of coins that weren't worth much above their face value. Unlike Indian Head pennies or Buffalo nickels, some were just unusual enough to stand out in change. (For instance, he had 25-30 rolls each of non-silver Eisenhower dollars and Kennedy half dollars, along with about 50 rolls of Susan B. Anthony dollars.)
In a similar twist to polished stones, I started keeping some of these coins in my pocket and would use them for cash purchases. I tended to use them only when the clerk or cashier was young. I would also occasionally make a show of finding one in my pocket (usually the larger Ike dollars) and just give it to a youngster in line behind us. I have no clue just what happened to them, but if nothing else, I've started a conversation with someone that I didn't know before.

Today I decided to buy either a couch, loveseat, futon, anything really. I haven't had anything but my big hammock for anyone to sit on for a few years now, but my family talked me into it finally. Anyway, this lady at the furniture store was super helpful, showed me options of online inventory and what I could and couldn't scoop up right away as I needed something in the next 1-1/2 weeks or so. I had picked out a small couch but needed to go measure it to make sure it would fit thru my tiny doorway. Turns out it wouldn't, not even close lol. Ended up with a nice big futon. When I was back at my apartment I decided to dig thru my tumbles and see if there was something she might like. She was extra helpful and not pushy at all, so I slapped a nice pink Botswana Agate on the counter after the sale and she loved it! Make that two unexpected hugs in as many days

Futons are really cool Chad The wooden frame broke after good long while of use Tellya what jigsaw puzzle that was to fix! anyway the frame is in storage because I built my own bunk bed with storage underneath. The mattress I use is the the futon mattress heavy relatively thin mattress the best way to move it was to roll it up lengthwise and put belts around both end... as a side note I was strolling this morn the Scottsdale niteclub bar scene reminded me
