Found this one while walking around with my mom in a little park, mostly buried in the ground. Just saw something bright red, walked past it first and then thought... "Oh F-it. I am a rock hound."
So I take my tool an get it out of the ground while my mom was smiling. (She loves stones as well. ) At fist I thought it might have been painted with some signal paint but I was curious. So it's freshly out of stage I and: Definitely not painted.
Really interesting "layering" all throughout the stone.
Nice red and while contrast.
NO idea what is might be and what to do with it.
Cut? Tumble? Grind off some stuff and keep as is? Still most importantly as I never had something like it in my hands: What might it be?

No idea what it may be, but it's really cool looking. Reminds me of Australian Print Stone.

Has to be tumble, right? Maybe knock off the crud on the right edge.
Very cool, whatever you do with it

My first thought was that it is a string-wrapped roast beef. …

Very cool, whatever you do with it Thanks and yes... I think that's what I'll go with. Grind off some stuff and then hope for a nice tumble result.

Sooooo I guess I'd best put it in a preheated oven rather then a tumbler? Any recommendations for herbs / seasoning in general?

@gabriel_GER How hard is it: If the hardness is 7 then jasper. I see some breccia in the first image and the quartz filling cracks. If it is hardness of 5-6 then rhyolite.

Since you're going to tumble it, the only seasoning you need to work with is Thyme! (LOL - See what I did there! LOL)

GabrielI did a Google Image search and Pat is correct. That's a roast beef! It definitely could be brecciated jasper, although, I've never seen jasper with that kind of design, but there are all kinds of jasper. Is there a stream or river nearby to where you found it? My point is, can you find more? I agree that doing a MOHs test is step 1.
If you don't have anybody around you that knows about geology, I'd suggest contacting a university for geosciences. A goolge search showed the below list:
Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. University of Bremen. University of Potsdam. Technical University of Munich. University of Munich. Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz. University of Hamburg.
Also you might ask them about good geological reference books for the area you are in, specific to minerals, rockhounding, etc.
I once found a couple of small fossilized pieces of two unknown species (to me) out in the wasteland of SW Nebraska. Dug them out of a small dune. I contacted State University to inquire about it and sent them an email complete with pics. They promptly sent me a response explaining that I had found and other fossils that could be found there.
Good luck!
