So, I have a Bucket that I dump all my Sludge and spent grit in after each stage cause of Course you cant dump it down a drain. It is about the consistancy of Pudding when it settles and i dump the excess water off. So my question is this, would there be any reason not to mix a lil water with the pudding thick slurry and use it as the water to cover a fresh Batch of rocks on stage one so that I start with a thick slurry that sticks to the rocks?
Just a thought instead of just dumping it outside as a way to repurpose and reuse it. Of course I would ONLY use it on Stage 1, the rest of the stages would get a full clean out with fresh water. But since stage one is just cutting anyway, I cant see the left over grits from the other stages being an issue since I would be adding fresh 80 grit SiC to the sludge in the barrel anyway.
Let me know what yall think.

I do the same thing with my used grit. Let it dry, scrape it out of the bucket and use it on the next stage one that I run. I add a little new stage one grit, but just a little. Works fine on the softer stones.

I am also not just using the used grit, but the rock sludge, water, and used grit. Like the liquid Left after you run a stage for the full 7 days with all the ground rock, left over grit, everything in it thinned out with just enough water to make it like a thin milkshake or thin yogurt or thin pudding.

Once dry, I keep mine in containers labeled "bucket grit" and use it in stage 1.

I pour my slurry from the rotary, stage one, in a jar and put some in when I start a new batch. I think many others do too. Helps to start out with a thicker slurry. Some even reused their polish but thats a whole other subject!

Right, Mine is gonna be the left over grit and rock sludge from all 5 stages so 80,220,500 SiC, and 1000 and 8000 AO, all in one bucket then that slurry poured in to fresh rocks for stage 1. Honestly, it is about the consistancy of Tomato soup. Just thin enough that it will pour, but very thick or like house Paint thickness.

If you give it enough time, the water will all evaporate and the sludge will harden into "sludge cakes". As others have stated, it's great to use as thickener...in stage one only. *If you want to use it now, it would be like Plaster of Paris...and you can make imprints of Big Foot tracks outside on your property!

YES! Only a touch thinner than Plaster of Paris. But I have a Lid on the bucket so that it doesnt dry out with just enough water in it to get it fluid enough to pour.

I think it a great question. I really hadn't thought about repurposing grit as I've only been using a 1.5 lb tumbler. Having just purchased a 12 lb tumbler, I was really amazed at how much grit it eats. I will really have to be more economical. Great thread

Been doing it for years. I save all the sludge, add some back in with next tumble.

Old grit slurry can come in handy with our 40 lb barrels, esecially with the way we do our coarse by leaving it run for 6 weeks and skipping stage 2.

I re-use old SiC slurry that's been dried out and pulverized into an almost powder consistency. Each SiC stage in my 3 Model B's takes about 2 cups of the powdered slurry in addition to the new SiC for the particular stage. One refinement I added to the process is to segregate the 600 SiC slurry from the coarser SiC slurries. Although 95% of my stages completely reduce the initial SiC charge, I decided to help the 600 stage by eliminating stray coarser SiC grit. I am not too worried by an occasional stray coarse grain, but putting a good many in the stage might not be good. Still debating in my own mind whether this is necessary.
One thing I will say, it should be impossible to re-use all of the slurry created in the various stages. In my case I add 2 cups slurry to a stage, then the fresh SiC and then the removed rock is added to the mix over the coarse of the run. I estimate that the process results in about 3 to 3 1/2 cups of slurry for the coarse run, less so for the 600 run. Either way I get the original 2 cups back plus the new. Reality is I have close to a 100% surplus minus any losses(spillage, etc) in the process.
I do the same for A/O stages. and I reuse Polish. It's not unusual to have 6 or 7 buckets in my garage of various slurries and polishes evaporating/being poured off/drying in my garage, it's worse in the winter when it's cooler and cloudier. I do have a some plastic mesh over each bucket to discourage mosquitoes. Then there's the Vib Lap pour off that does not get re-used.

I let my slurry dry out completely then dump the puck into a small storage bin. Then I break it up into a powder using a hammer. For my stage 1 barrels I add equal parts grit and dried slurry. So in my 3 lb barrels I use 3 Tbsp of each and in my 6lb barrel I use 10 Tbsp of each.

I would love to reuse my old slurry, but every time I’ve tried, my rocks make less progress over the coarse of a week’s time. The new grit I add with the load wears down much more slowly also. I figured the old slurry was blocking the new grit from doing its job. 🤷🏼♀️

Same weight in rocks, Same type of rocks, Start one with old slurry and new grit, Start the other with Plain water and new grit, run both for 7 days and see which rocks lose the most weight! I love Science expirements! Thanks for the Idea!

I tried it four weeks and I was sorely disappointed when the results were negative. So I wondered “What in the world am I going to do with all this used grit?” Then I thought of the dry creek bed I’d been building in the backyard with all my culled rocks. And I thought maybe adding the powdery grit would help reduce erosion, so I’ll try that. Maybe that will be another use for it! LOL

I do stuff like this because with my ADHD and Autism(not confirmed but we are pretty sure) It helps me to learn trying it different ways and seeing what works for me and what doesnt. You can tell me something wont work till your blue in the face, I will still have to try it myself and see for myself lol.

But I think the sweet spot is going to be about like the consistancy of heavy whipping cream. Just a guess tho. Thick enough to stick but still thin enough to allow free movement.
