Time to start thinking about who all is going to Quartzsite in January! Plenty of time for the procrastinators of the world, self included, to start looking ahead and forming a plan. Priorities at this point should be... 1. Hotels or place to stay. The hotel situation around QZ is pretty dismal to be honest. Some of what we used to think of as middle of the road three-star hotels in Blythe have deteriorated past the point of recommendation so that kind of leaves the choice of over-paying or sleeping in a dive. 2. What dates - in relation to what shows are happening. Assuming that nothing has changed, Desert Gardens tends to run for the entire month but the ever-popular QIA PowWow is the specific 3rd week/weekend of January. 3. What to bring to Tony's catmandewe RTH BBQ - 1/20/2023 Friday afternoon and evening at Desert Gardens. 4. Who is leading a field trip and to where and who is going with them. 5. Will there be enough interest in a RTH Event shirt this year? It doesn't cost me any money to develop and sell individual shirts but if we sell like two it's kind of a waste of time. 6. Who will win the prize for driving from the longest distance? My money is on one of the Wyo/SD/MO/CO or even MI guys or gals making it this year. I'll look and see what the Draft Kings line on jasoninsd making it this year and let you know.

I am seriously considering finding a remotely affordable RV spot with at least electricity in Qsite and spending a few days. If cheap enough leaving it there for a month and driving the affordable mpg vehicle there a few times with a spot to sleep. I know boondocking is free but we just don't have the battery life to do that.
Did y'all like the pasta salad this year? Maybe home made pico de galla and chips too if I can figure out how to not just grow a garden to feed *#^$@%$ round tail squirrels.
No driving prize for us, we're 2 hours away.

I am thinking about buying a class A motor home. If it sleeps six and I boondock I should be able to rent beds to pay for my trip and possibly pay for the motor home. A trip to the water and dump station every other day would work if I can talk the people into a travelers shower every day.
The thing is cheap because it has a reverse problem but who needs reverse anyway People towing cars can't back up without disconnecting so the answer is (pay attention).
The only thing I have to worry about is whether or not there is a spot for my slab saw. Maybe a slide out in the lower storage area.
If this goes like my other projects I should be ready about the middle of February. Jim

Where exactly is it located as in like what state? The rock festivities start in Quartzsite AZ around the 1st of January then most of it moves down to Tucson for the big international gem shows starting in February. We typically have an RTH meet up around the 3rd weekend of January.

Mrs and I are likely to be there, just like last year. We are currently in the process of flipping my wife’s twin into a rock nut too so she may be in tow if we go. Got another couple who are not members here but do tha rock thang so they may go too! We usually stay in Blythe and book the rooms early as possible, like mid November to make sure there is availability. We used to just camp any old place out in the washes back in the day but a hot shower is definitely nice at the end of the day.

Shoot, we're there already? Amazing. RL had gotten in the way the last couple of years, so we'll have to start looking. Tony's suggestion about Air BnB is something I never would have even thought of, although I've used the site in the past for other trips. I can't commit now, but I'll certainly mark the calendar and start looking. Thanks for the reminder, Tommy.

wampidytoo my experience with transmissions is that reverse fails right before the entire transmission dies. Sure would like to see you there but I fear that you might want to reconsider or at least look into what a transmission replacement will cost.

I'm interested for sure. For those who have to take time off from work: what days should folks target? Can anyone give us more info about the event itself? I dig the vibe and getting together w y'all with side trips, but am unsure what exactly IT is... a big gem show? I found this website: www.tysonwells.com/rock---gem-show.htmlThis itself makes me think the response I'm gonna get is "we don't need no stink in' websites!!" Prove me wrong *edited for typo

It is pretty much the rockhound event of the year. Sure there is Tucson and Denver, etc. but Quartzite is essentially the rockhound and lapidary Mecca of the year with arts, crafts, jewelry, self promoted items, etc sprinkled throughout. My best description is a town wide swapmeet with the focus on rocks, minerals, and lapidary with many of the dealers being the artisans themselves, the miners who recovered the stones, etc. Many members here will have booths at the Pow Wow and Desert Gardens. Also I’ve been informed by a member of our club who knows them personally the Aussies will be at Desert Gardens this year in their usual spot. I’d imagine they have a ton of exciting material since they have been stuck over there since the beginning of Covid.

Prove me wrong *edited for typo You might want to take a look at this thread for guidance. It was written in 2017, but it contains a lot of great info. It's what I used to sort things out, as that was the year for my first time there. forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/thread/81251/newbies-guide-quartzsite-thread-firstFWIW, I went there when the Pow Wow show started. That allowed me to hit the first days of Pow Wow and then head over to Desert Gardens with the overlap of dates. Desert Gardens does start sooner that when I went, but going when I did allowed me to go to both shows. Tyson Wells is another show which runs the same time, but I never got there. Don't know too much about that one, but it looks to be more like a swap meet as opposed to Pow Wow and Desert Gardens which are mostly rock related.

I’m considering going, anyone know what it takes to get a booth/vendor space? I don’t have a business selling rock, but it would be nice to bring enough rough to cover the trip expense. Here is the website for the show/promoter. It has contact info on it, so it's probably best to hear the details from them. desertgardensrockgemandmineralshow.com/
