I bought a bunch of rocks from a local guy, but the rocks aren't local. This bucket was full of eggs/nodules/geodes - maybe two different kinds. Most haven't been opened, and their is a large range in sizes. Any help in ID is much appreciated! I sprayed some of the broken ones to show their color These first three I could not scratch the "inside" material with stainless steel, but the "outer" material is easily scratched #1 #2 #3 This last one that was broken has an outer material that is much harder to scratch, and the outer material is greenish and kind of metallic looking. #4 The other side of #4

Nice batch of Thundereggs! I'm tagging Fossilman, woodman, and 1dave to see if they recognize them as being from a specific location. I'm guessing they look like they're Richardson's Ranch T-eggs...but I'm not sure...

Could #4's green material be olivine? It kind of looks like that material. (I have been reading about thundereggs, and now I know just enough to be dangerous!)

Your exterior "knobbies" are probably a bunch of tiny spheroids. The green could be copper or . . . IF you really want to know, I suggest you visit the Geode Kid's Collection in Deming New Mexico. A copy of his book would help. Richardson Ranch, Oregon - tend to have strong ridges. Dugway Utah - not so much. Zacatecas Mexico has a unique interior. Spencer Idaho - tends to fill with precious opal and has a black pitchstone matrix, I like this one from somewhere in Australia because it shows all the shattered material that was sucked in by the vacuum as steam turned back to water.

Thanks, 1dave , for all the great info! I had found a great thread you made in 2014 that explained how thundereggs form, and it is wonderful. Geology is so interesting! Thanks for being a pillar of knowledge once again! I may just have to cut some of these eggs to help aid the ID. I just have a minor repair to my saw I've got to get squared away.

Whatever they are, I would leave the 2nd broken one as is. It is a perfect specimen.

Agree these don't look like RIchardson's. The substrate looks similar to Lucky Strike Mine (side note I'm going this weekend I hope!) and others from the Ochocos in Oregon. Caveat: Not an expert, the two I mention happen to be the varieties I see the most I.e. ones I'm most familiar with.

I bet you're onto something....When I looked up images on Lucky Strike thundereggs, there were some that looked very similar, especially from the outside. Since you've hunted for them before, you probably have a really good eye for them.

BTW, this is a lot of fun. If you do cut them, you have to share on this thread ericabelle!

JR8675309 , they really do look like the Lucky Strike eggs! I think you've figured it out. I will definitely cut them! Hopefully I'll have time to do it Sunday. What do you think of #3, with all the orange and yellow? It certainly looks like an egg yoke! It looks really different on the inside, but the same on the outside, so do you think it must be from the same area?

I've only gotten one w yellow and it came from RRR.
