Have always been an early riser. As young kids my brother and I would be up before 5:00am most summer days except Sunday armed with a bucket each to collect pop bottles. Had to beat any competition. Two kids aged 7 and 5 wandering the main drag collecting around the bowling alley and the Ice house and the two beer joints, only in the 50's!!. Collecting was good and we always had pocket change. Every so often we would find cash that folks dropped. That training served me well in college as I always signed up for 7:00am classes so I could work my part time job in the afternoons. Later I moved my wake up time to 4:00am for the company that I worked for over 40 years. It has took me almost 3 years after retiring to move my wakeup time to 5:00 - 5:30am. I do take a re-charge nap in the afternoon most days, setting the timer on oven to about 25 minutes. It's perfect as I do not get into rem sleep and wake up recharged. I do find that the quiet time of the morning before anyone else is stirring as my most productive and most creative. One thing I have managed to do is to avoid needing coffee, or caffeinated tea, I wake up I am good to go. You sound like DH. From the time he was a toddler, he has always gotten up real early. He likes the quiet time, too. With his new schedule he gets up late- 7-7:30. He doesn't like it.

In a perfect week I would be in bed at 10pm and up at 6 every day. That is my comfort zone where I feel the most alive and healthy and I am a SOLID sleeper most of the time. If I wake up at all during the night it's probably because the big dogs on each side of the bed either growled or whined to get out and do their business. That being said my job interferes with this quite frequently and at least once or twice a month I have a job that keeps me out till after midnight, or has me up at 4am or worse. With an assist from the wife I am pretty careful not to allow them to schedule me with a late run followed by and early rise because if I allow that I'm shot for a full day afterwards. It's no fun at all having your sleep schedule thrown off.
Whenever we go to the brother in laws house for a weekend we are wiped out for a day or so. We end up awake most of the time we are there.

When the kids force me to! Which is normal around 7-8:30. We go to bed anywhere around 9-10:30.

I very rarely sleep through a night. It takes me at least an hour or so to fall asleep when I hit the hay. My brain does not like to stop working. Power surges (hot flashes) wake me up usually 2 or 3 times a night. More on a really bad night. Vince gets up on weekdays at 6:00 a.m. to get ready for work. I get up when he does. Once I'm up I can't fall back asleep in the morning. I'd say I usually get maybe 6 hours of sleep. I don't take naps because I usually can't actually fall asleep anyway, so I do "power naps" sometimes. Just shut my eyes for 10 minutes. If I do actually have a real nap, I feel like a Mack truck hit me, so I try to avoid them.

I'm trying like crazy to get back on a decent schedule. I loath getting up too early- not a morning person. Since DH's schedule changed, I get up around 4:30 to 5:30. Ugh! I know as one gets older they need less sleep. I'm wondering if that's not part of it, too. I got to bed around 11:00. I find I need a nap in the afternoon, if I can get one, which only makes matters worse.
So, seeing how a lot of us are getting on... when do you get up- or how much sleep do you get? Just curious- or, misery loves company.
I go to bed between 3 and 5am and mon-fri I get up at 12pm(gotta go see my girl at 1pm), however on the weekend my ass sometimes doesnt roll out of bed till 3 or 4pm.

You can find the videos on youtube, and I swear by them as weird as it seems it works. I was on 2 differnt sleeping pills just to sleep before I found ASMR videos(I play them on my computer with the screen off just for the sounds) and Now I take zero sleeping pills.

5-5:30 always, too many things to get done in the morning before work or projects, or even sometimes, play starts. Rarely to bed after 9pm.
I used to sleep soundly until the last couple of years, now not so much, a good book & a red light (not to wake Tom).
Tom on the other hand has always not sleep well. Not sure if it's age, a guy thing or what. But if I sleep as little as he does in a night I'm wiped for the day. I guess we all somehow get what we need.

I work 12hr nightshift 3 on 3 off. My job is 120 miles away so I stay there when I'm on. I come home and switch to being up during the day. Soooo, I have zero regular sleep/wake patterns. Some days are worse than others. My tumblers don't care what time I mess with them lol

Over the last 11 years as an Operating Engineer, I have had a start time that has covered every hour of the clock. Recently, I have been starting at 4-6pm, working at least 10s. I only have to drive 60-67 miles each way. Having the option to stay down where you work is a good idea, but even the cost of that adds up. I had to drive 101-121 miles each way for 8 months, some time ago (and they only gave me 8hr shifts). Dirtsifter, I'd be interested in your opinion/experience. When I have to transition from working nights to a morning shift; because waking hours are going to be all messed up, if I have a day in between; rather than going to bed when I get home from work, I will just stay up for around 30 hours, then hope that that resets things. For those of you with non-extreme sleep problems, I ran across this page from a podcast which I occasionally check out. hubermanlab.com/sleep-toolkit-tools-for-optimizing-sleep-and-sleep-wake-timing/I have experimented with the supplements talked about (Myo-Inositol, Apigenin, and L-Theanine, as well as listening to NSDR or Yoga Nidra (on Youtube), as vance71975 suggested. For me, the combination lets me rest, and get back to sleep when I wake up (in the night/day).

Sorry rockjunquie, I did not answer your initial question. I do my best, and usually get 8 hours sleep (even if that means just coming home, showering, and going to bed). 5 hours is my minimum; although, I can't fully function too long on that.

Rockjunquie, I am one of the lucky ones that goes to sleep very quickly and sleeps solidly from 10 pm to 6.30 am. Even with several restroom breaks I fall back to sleep easily. My wife is not so lucky. We are retired school teachers so our wake up schedule was earlier to get the children and ourselves ready for school. Lucky to be retired!

I find that a nap of an odd number of hours works best..3-5. Ambien and flexeril are helpful. Note that I try to make no important decisions or play with power tools on that first day home.

Since I'm on forced vacation, I'm up around 7-9am now.

I'm up at 5-5:30 on weekdays, and anywhere from 6-9 depending on how the much crashing the cats make on the weekends. I'd say 5-6 hours is pretty normal. Once a month or so I get into a habit of 3-4 hours for a couple nights, swearing I'll never do it again. I'm better than I used to be, sometimes I'd pull 2 nights of no sleep...

Thanks for all your input! It's easy to see that the subject is very subjective.
DH can survive indefinitely on 5-6 hours sleep. If he sleeps any longer he wakes up with a backache. He doesn't get backaches from anything else. We have a very good Sleep Number bed. Doubt it's the bed. He's just not one to lay around.
My BIL is on revolving shifts, as others have mentioned. It has been hell on his health- he's getting older. And, it has been a strain on his marriage. I think it should be illegal to make people work like that. It's extremely unhealthy.
I started a med for restless legs that works 85% of the time- for which I am grateful. But, DH says my leg jumps all night while I am asleep and it wakes him up. Sometimes, I just sleep on the couch.
