This rock was collected in Grand Marais in September. Can you help identify it and tell me how to polish it? I don’t want to ruin it. I’m new to this so my available resources are limited to Lortone Rotary Tumbler and dremel. Thank you in advance.

Portions look like agate to me.

laz It won’t take you long to figure out that you’re not going to ruin a rock overnight with a tumbler. You just need to throw them in and get started. The rock you showed looks pretty tough. I would guess that after a week tumbling in coarse grit, you will be surprised how little it has ground down. Tumbling is kind of a trial and error hobby but most folks pick it up pretty fast. Some very soft rocks require special techniques. Obsidian and Apache tears can be pretty tricky. Tumbling agates is about as easy as it gets. Good luck. Looking forward to some shiny rock photos.

It has very nice shape already. Should be great for tumble.
