I bought this Biggs slab on facebook and it arrived in the mail today. These are the listing pictures showing both sides. The color was way off and I used photo shop to color correct enough to show it is Blue Biggs When studying both sides of the slab, I can see that the pattern is quite different. The slab is slightly tapered 1/2"+ to 1/2"-. I plan to split it. The easiest way would be to split it on a slab saw. Mine isn't big enough and I don't trust my aim splitting on a slab saw. I will remove all the stuff that I don't want and then start trimming out smaller areas that I can split using my trim saw. I don't have x-ray vision or the ability to think in 3d. There are also fractures that may or may not go all the way through and fractures don't align front to back. My approach will be cut a little, study a little and so on....

That is a really nice piece of Biggs. Good luck. My aim is usually off when trying to split using a trim saw.

stardiamondI like your approach to the slab. I always spend more time thinking about valuable slabs too. The slab is going to produce some amazing cabs.

I have the first part of the plan, trim off the brown area and then make two vertical lines. I can then take a look at the fracture line. I won't trim the preforms until the three pieces are trimmed. There is some nice stuff on the reverse side near the bottom where I marked. One step at a time.

I made the cuts and didn't screw anything up. The reverse: I only laid out three of the six areas and will wait for inspiration. Next step is splitting and I want to be in the right mindset before I attempt that.

I laid out 3 and got 3. Things became simpler when I realized there was only one piece that could be split and the others just thinned. The more interesting part of the slab was the top which was the thinnest part. I've got one more to design and the side showing is the best.

The seller on facebook shipped another person's order to me by mistake. They sent me a message that when they ship mine they would include a new mailing label and give me another slab for free for my trouble. This one is an even 5/8 inch so I will wait for my new saw to arrive to split it.
