Madison, you? I'd like to check out rib mountain sometime this month if it's not covered in snow yet. I am in Madison as well! I've never hounded up at Rib Mtn. Have you been up there before? Are you planning on walking the mountain or the river?

Oh awesome! Lets hound together some time. Are you in the Madison Gem and Mineral Club? It's been my only rock community outside of the internet. I've never been to rib mountain before. It just keeps popping up in different references. I'm looking for more tumbler material and have plenty of chert from the local area. I hear they have some really good quartz up there though, as well as gneiss, the state rock red granite, and syenite. The "mountain" itself is a xenolith of quartzite. I think it's a big place, still researching where I want to go. I think there's a quarry or two. I would definitely be interested in hounding sometime! I have been to a few places in the state, but have hounded more out of state. I am not a member of the Madison Gem and Mineral Club, but have thought about joining many times... maybe I should finally do so. I do walk by it every time I go to Bernie's. I would like to get a hounding trip up by fernwood sometime. We talked about it during Covid and decided to wait till things cooled down a bit and I think they've cooled a bit. She also works at Oso brewery, so we don't have to go thirsty. I imagine the trip to Rib mountain wouldn't be till next year at this point...?

Wausau area and/or at my place filled with glacial debris. Some other places in Portage County. O'so has changed a lot lately. A full service brew pub with awesome foods and almost full service bar with alcohol, ciders, wines, etc. Note, that for any who want to camp, there are several campgrounds in the area. These include the best hidden Wisconsin State park, Hartman Creek. It is 5 miles from my place and I love it. Lots of lakes and rocks. There is a horse stable and full service campground across the road from my place. If anyone wants to park an rv at my place, I have full electric access and water access. Plenty of room. I would love to meet some more from RTH and host a rock search in this area.

fernwood and @hefty...Yes, this keeps sounding more and more fun! Camping, rocks, good people... sounds great to me! We should start to plan on a time and try to get some more RTH people rounded up for a camping/rocking day/weekend or something. Maybe you need a pond dug up or something, Beth...? I bet there's some good stuff buried on your land in the glacial belt!

It happens to be a former stream that ran to a small lake just East of my property. Now it is a small pond during Spring run off or when there is lots of rain. Digging a pond couldn't really happen without a lot of legal hoops to jump through, but I could host a rock hunt and if anyone wants to do some digging, that is fine with me. I do have a small, former sand pit on my land.

I have a friend who got Ok'd to dig a small pond on his land and ended up digging a small lake... he's an ask for forgiveness kinda guy. Sounds like you have some beautiful land, fernwood, how many acres do you have?

Here is my place. This view shows the seasonal stream and ponds on mt property. They start about 3 miles to the West of me.

Wow, that looks awesome! A nice amount of open land and wooded area as well. Looks like you have endless nooks and crannies to explore on that land for rocks and treasure.
So, is the stream dry all but the spring and heavy rain years?

WOW @hefty thank you so much for the information! I just signed up for the Wheelhouse newsletter... we'll see if I can win the lottery.
Good luck with the snow out there today!

Apparently the spring classes went up this morning. Both of the lapidary classes were already full when I checked. Shit's insane. They finally offered Intermediate level too but I missed out. Guess there's always next year... Holy crap! I was in a meeting and didn't get a chance to check my email... this is some pretty cutthroat stuff! You would think that based on the popularity of the class that they would try adding an additional class or two. Thanks for the help anyway, it's a better chance than I had before you told me about it... thanks again! We should keep in touch and go play some pinball or something sometime... at least during the frozen snow covered land season.

I have heard that is a very cool area to rock hound.
I have looked at glacial maps of the area and the former path of the river. Researching land geography and the changes over the years can be very enlightening.
Have fun and be sure to post lots of photos.

I already have some plans for Sunday, but if I can get out of it I will. I would like to see the hounding area and I love that area of the state! I get to go to Arizona hounding the second week of January! Sorry, excited and had to share.

Looks like it's hounding season again already! I'm thinking about a trip to Prairie du Chien this Sunday if anyone wants to come. stewdogg ? First hunt of the year. It's supposed to be a club secret spot but I met other people there so I'd share it with some fellow tumblers. Last time I went I found a few LSA's, mostly pea-sized; one was golfball size but otherwise had minimal features. Some petrified wood and a lot of chert/jasper of course too. The site is a pile of gravel, dredged from the ancient Wyalusing river bed. Once upon a time the present day Mississippi River turned east at Prairie du Chien and traveled NE along present day Wisconsin River, exiting at Green Bay. This path was blocked by glaciers at some point, causing the river to break south at Wyalusing. Later when the glaciers melted, the WI river was revived and started flowing west to reunite with the new Mississippi. Pretty cool place, pretty cool rocks. Lots of Native American history too. @hefty did you end up going out to Prairie du Chien picking?
