Disclosure - I did not make this ring. I did cut the stone. ( A long time ago - it finally found a home. ) Goldsmith friend did the casting and setting.
Just posting this to show opal can look okay in silver. Co-worker had it made for his step-daughter. She picked the stone and design.
My friend is a great goldsmith - not so much the same as a photographer... .
EDIT - Second photo (from new owner) not much better but does show the flash in the center ribbon.
According to my co-worker, she loves it. Mission accomplished... .

Thanks. The center "ribbon" in that opal rolls up at a different angle from either end, and has more blue and orange in it.
Makes for a reasonably interesting piece with the opal oriented the way it is in the ring.

Very nice, but man you're right about the photography. Doesn't do it justice.

The opal is gorgeous and I like, what appears to be, a slightly recessed setting. Good for protecting a ring stone.

I love the colors in that opalescence! Really nice grind on that one Vince!

Good eye, rockjunquie. That is a recessed setting. Similar to one he made for me about 25 years ago.
jasoninsd - like most opals, there's more color there than any single photo can show. That was a nice little opal. She picked it out of over 100 that she saw when they came to our studio.
There was one other serious contender, but her stepdad said "Yeah, she ain't gettin' that one." when I told him the price. Luckily for him, she picked this one all on her own so he didn't have to be the grinch... .

Beautiful.
Speculating here, but I think that your friend's (or his daughter's) choice to set the opal oriented across the finger is the better one. I would expect the rolling ribbon fire to be more visible/active with slight rotational hand movements. Conversely, closing/opening hand movements would tend to be greater and faster, possibly moving beyond good fire return.

Thanks, MsAli. Long time no see here. Not much anyway. I remember your post in the "Winter" thread, so I guess you've been busy finding ways to stay warm up there. Not a bad thing when there are two creative minds at work.
opalpyrexia - The roll runs diagonally across the short axis, so we showed her how it moved in the light. Definitely better this way for a ring, and with the center ribbon showing up at a different angle (opening/closing or raising/lowering the hand) there's a cool "alternating" pattern.

Its great to see what everyone has been up to! NDK and I haven't been very creative as we were kind of focusing elsewhere. We got a whole winter ahead to play with rocks 😀
