Rockpickerforever, I like your wiggle room answer because my initial question about a sail design implied a loosely triangular shape such as the cab sample Parfive provided. Cutting flat and long straight sides on a flat lap is as easy as is removing saw marks on the back of a cab because the surface is flat. My real question was my finding a piece of material that allowed for slightly curved sides or straight sides in my finished cab.

Fun playing ping pong with you Tommy- but as you say Rules are rules - SO Since I'm the final arbiter today I'm going to say: Curved sides (convex or concave) are allowed
BUT the shape has to have 3 distinct sides & corners.
AND be easily recognizable as a triangle.
In other words, no egg shapes, tear drops, etc, etc, etc. Can the fun begin already ?? Patty
DONE!!! haha Contest Theme: Loosely Triangular! as chosen by our contest winner for November, liveoak. Contestants are asked to create a triangle shaped cabochon of any material, size color. Curved sides (convex or concave) and rounded corners are allowed BUT the shape has to have 3 distinct sides & corners AND be easily recognizable as a triangle. Edited: added back the "rounded corners" note

Technically that becomes a hexagon. But if the corners are kept small, so it's OBVIOUSLY a triangle, than I don't see a problem.
Thanks for asking,
Patty

I hope this meets the criteria . Many thanks to wpotterw for the rhodochrosite and the quartz. The cab was capped because of the mixed hardness of the rhodocrosite which has pyrite, hematite and quartz mixed in for good measure!

Yay! Finally some action! 🔺👍 I didn’t know about all the different materials in rhodochrosite, that’s interesting info. Pretty cab, nice variety of colors in the banding.

I had already cut a Noreena cab for this triangle contest, but then decided that it probably wouldn't be a contender. So after rummaging through my material again, I finally decided to take a chance with this beat-up Botswana piece. Its underside looked pretty safe, so I gave it a go —

Thank you, Jason. I was really worried that the bands would do some traveling after studying the backside. But it was a thick slab, so I had to take a slice off the back with my trim saw. After doing that it looked as though the bands came back into alignment — whew!

Yeah, dang Gary. That top polished pic with the reflection of the lights looks like a grinning snake to me. The Rhodo is super nice too brotherbill and a personal favorite material.

brotherbill, opalpyrexia way to get the contest rolling with these two gorgeous cabs! We could stop the contest right now and it would be an absolute struggle to decide.
