I could be wrong here...so take what I'm saying as a potential starting point for finding the right answer! LOL
I think that's actually "Picture Stone" versus what we commonly think of as "Picture Jasper" (most commonly from the Owyhee area).
Now that being said, if you look up Namibian Picture Stone...or even Owyhee Picture Stone (I saw a reference for this as well), they do get classified as a "jasper". However...and this might be where I'm wrong...I don't think this is an actual jasper by the correct definition. I think it's another case where a material gets slapped with the jasper ID, when in fact it's something else.
If you look at any of the images on the net of "Picture Stone", you'll see the same type of pitting that you're experiencing...

I always love the picture stones. One thing I like about them is they already look very nice after step 1 grinding.
Thanks for helping me set a more realistic expectation for the close-up looks. They look great anyway.

Yep some of that stuff was ones of the first batches I finished and thinking I couldn't get a better shine on a "jasper" was very disheartening! I've recently rerun a couple pieces through and finished in a submicron polish and they maybe turned out a bit better (or I just happened to choose some harder/better pieces to rerun).

Nice lookin' rocks. The "picture jasper" might be sandstone. There's a lot of that around, and the colors are right.

I am far from an expert on identifying rocks. I live in Florida, so I could probably identify quartz and limestone and not much else (well, not entirely true thanks to watching Robs videos where he collects rocks on the beach and knowing a handful of common ones). But it was advertised on The Rock Shed website as picture jasper and if I google "picture jasper" rocks that look just like mine are all the first results. I know that doesn't necessarily mean much and that there are rocks called jasper that are not actually jasper (like the Kambaba Jasper I am currently tumbling, which is actually a type of Rhyolite if I understand correctly). It's also hard to find information about various rocks because what seems to come up are either articles about the healing powers and what chakra it opens or an Etsy store of someone selling it. But most places I look, Owyhee Jasper is mentioned as being separate to or a type of Picture Jasper.

Those turned out pretty darn good. Do you have photos of the SD prairie agate? Thanks for sharing.

Do you have photos of the SD prairie agate? Those will be come soon. This particular batch of rocks made me decide how I approach what I am tumbling. What I was doing is trying to have 4 - 5 different rocks types on hand and each week when I do my cleanouts and I need to add more, I'd choose whatever rock seemed to have the fewest pieces and replace it with some more of that. However, this lead to every single cleanout for almost a full year being exactly the same. So now I've decided to do all of rock A and as it runs out, replace it with rock B, and so on. It means that each cleanout will have the same rocks, but at least after a month or two I've moved onto a different rock. It also means I can finish an entire rock type from start to finish and then pick through them to find my favorites. I started all 4 of these in January 2022 and only finished 3 out of the 4 through polish and the end of last year and the SD Prairie Agate literally just finished a few days ago. I still need to get some pictures of it.

LOL Can't wait to see the pics of the Prairie Agates. Who knows...I may have walked over them at one point prior to them heading to you! LOL
