Here's my first attempt at tumbling rocks. I followed Mr. Rob's advice from his Michigan (Go Blue!) Rocks Youtube channel. Everything was rotary tumbled. Polish was a dry tumble with micro alumina in corn cobs for 5 days. Yeah, not exactly ready for any competition tumbling, but it was fun. The ones on the right are misc. horn corals and other "soft" stones. I'll work on my photo technique as I progress! These all came from a beach that is near the "tip of the mitt" on Lake Huron. Some of them are kind of "garbage" - along for the ride and adding to the volume of the tumbler. I tried a wet polish with micro alumina....hated it, so went back 400, tried wet polish with Cerium Oxide...hated that, too.... I like the dry tumble method for these stones. Experimenting and having fun with it! The whole batch.... (is this blurry or is it my glasses...?) Detail of some of the larger stones.... Detail on some smaller stones.... Top view of my (current) favorite... The flip side of above...

You're pretty brave using Petoskey's for your first tumble! They turned out really good. Congrats!

You've got some nice ones there. I hear they aren't easy to tumble.

More like.... "I don't have the patience to wait 5+ weeks for my first batch of rocks!" So yeah, like 3 weeks was sooooo less time.... Seriously, starting off with good stones makes all the difference. Or - at least - starting off with stones that look good after the first stage is critical. The batch was 100% Petosky stones and I used ceramics at each stage prior to the polish.

You guys have cool rocks in your part. I’m jealous you can just walk around and pick up Petosky’s! Great job on your tumbles!

Very nice rocks! Love the Petosky stones so much! My first batch was moonstone (also gutsy) but I failed miserably lol...Nothing I can't put back through, just have had others I'd rather tackle first. Great job!!
