I'm pretty sure opalpyrexia Gary gets the Wile E. Coyote Super Genius Award for the week! Super simple solution! Fantastic idea on this Gary!

Here's the modification:
I used a pointed bur in my flexshaft to make a starter depression in the spray shield, and then I clamped it in wood for stability while drilling with a #29 bit to be able to tap with 8-32 threads. (A 1/8" bit would have worked, too.) I chose 10-32 in order to have sufficient threads in the relatively thin plastic.
The hole is drilled:
Threads are tapped and an 8-32 screw is inserted:
And here's the blade guard reinstalled. I tightened it finger-tight, which is sufficient to keep it in place:
Excellent! Thank you! I see you did away with JB Weld. Do you think the plastic will spit where the seam is?

You're welcome, Tela! I think that the plastic is going to be OK. My guard didn't move on the shaft prior to the mod, but I'm sure that a very light finger-tightening would be sufficient to secure a guard that would otherwise move.

I'm going to give Ameritool a chance to address this and then I'll do as you have done. Thanks a lot for your help.
I'll update after I talk to Ameritool and see what their customer service is like. I already like that they want me to contact their service guy/technician when he gets back. I actually spoke with a woman in the office there- not someone 5000 miles away.
Anyway, as you own their saw, too, I'll let you know about my experience with them.

You might consider a thumbscrew or regular set screw just so it's easier to grasp.

Well, I talked to Bob at Ameritool, which apparently is also Covington. He tried to get the owner to throw me a bone, but because the saw is not new, I would need a new one at 29.95. Bob suggested tape. Next time I have it out, I'll do the screw fix as opalpyrexia suggested and add a thumb screw, too.
