I made a trip to Nethers farm a few weeks ago to help cure my cabin fever. It was a nice day for January and I had the place to myself. I was only there to get material for the tumblers and found plenty. Not being sure how the stuff would work up, I just grabbed a little bit of everything to experiment with. After a few weeks in the tumblers I am liking what I see. Some of the colors tumble out as its just surface color but a lot of it as good color throughot. Even the ones without the color are showing nice design. Still a ways to go but looking promising. For those who are looking to go and collect material for tumbling, there is no need to get in the pits with hammer and chisel. There is plenty of material laying everywhere. I did do a little chisel work (about 5 minutes worth) out of curiosity to see how it breaks out.....I prefer to just pick It up. I did use the hammer to break some surface pieces to check for good color. There was also plenty of garbage left in and around the pits. It's a shame people have such little respect for the great lady that let's the public on her property. Easy to see why people don't open their properties up to the public. I did my part to help clean some up and hopefully others will too to help keep the place open. I was also allowed to walk the cut corn field next to the house to collect.....jackpot! This was more my style of collecting. There was flint everywhere and already broken into perfect tumbling size pieces by the plow. I only made a few passes but could have gotten all in needed in the field without going to the pits. Overall enjoyable trip. Just some of the stuff a grabbed.....

I applaud you for doing your part to "pick up" after others. By that, I'm actually referring to the trash you picked up...but I guess it would apply to the tailings you picked up as well! LOL The flint from there is one of the most amazing materials to tumble...as well as cab! It polishes SO amazingly well!! I look forward to seeing your progress (if you do) and the end results!

Cool beans. Make sure to update with some more pics as your tumbles progress!

That's why I don't let just anybody hunt my property. I'm not picking up behind them because I did them a favor.
Nice looking haul brother! I'll get up there one day.

This is awesome! Thank you for posting about your trip. I think it's pretty cool that she lets people do this - get so frustrated by the lack of respect that others hold. I'll be sure to bring a trash bag and help clean up any spaces I enter.

Those look like some great stones from Nethers. I was there in the fall and had a similar experience and was able to gather some great flint. I did not see much garbage, but all but a couple of the pits were pretty deep in leaves. I will make sure to take a bag next time to gather what I find when there. Thank you for doing your part as well. I will actually have a chance to possibly return there next week (weather permitting) and would love to try the cornfield. Do you mind me asking how you got permission to do that? When I was last there I had a great discussion with Mrs. Nethers. Maybe she will remember me. BTW, keep going on the polishing. I tumbled and polished a few pieces and I think they have turned out really nice. I had another question for you (or anyone who reads this). I found the attached stone in one of the pits. At the time it just looked like a strange stone and was covered in mud. After cleaning it and soaking it in Iron Out, this is what it looks like. It appears to be a large crystal and is MUCH heavier and dense than the flint. Does anyone know what it is? Is there anything I could do to it like tumble or polish on a cab machine. If it is truly unique, I am fine just leaving it as is but just wondering. insert code here

She just offered it up. I'm sure it's all about timing as to if the field is being worked with crops at the time. They were spreading manure in the field before I walked over there so I only walked the edge rows of where they sprayed. I am sure any rain has watered-down the lovely smell by now. I found about a dozen pieces of flint with big crystal pockets in them. Cool looking but I am not sure what I'll do with them yet. I didn't get any solid pieces like yours.

Great, thank you. I will talk to Mrs. Nethers and hopefully it will still be pre-planting season.

Since the weather was so lovely last weekend, I went on a quick road trip to Nethers Farm to check it out and pick up some tumbling rough. Thought it might be helpful to share the new prices for 2023 and a couple of other items on the porch’s info sheet that I haven’t seen posted elsewhere:
Prices: $10 per person +$1.00 per pound Hours: 9am - 6pm Closed: November- March
Mrs. Nethers did come to the door while I was reading the info sheet and invited me to do some picking in both the pits and the fields next to house at the old prices. Unfortunately the flint in fields have been covered in “fertilizer” so I quickly gave up searching there and stuck to the pits. Came home with 40 lbs!

I am headed there on Friday and hope that she will let me collect a little. Interesting about the prices, but still worth it to me. Too bad about the fields. Not too fun hunting in manure. Again, thanks for letting me know and happy for you that you were able to get some rocks.!

There was plenty to pick from by the pits but some of the ground cover/dirt piles were still frozen. The rock hammer and trowel I forgot at home would have come in handy. Doh! Joanna
