I was supposed to go this weekend, but as usual I've been bailed on. For those of you who have been - is it a location that would be ok for someone to go solo? I'm not really gung-ho on solo travel, but I'm tired of getting stood up...since I've never been, just looking for guidance on whether or not it's safe for someone to go it alone and just do it? Can I get lost? I know I've heard stories of people getting banged up there, but is there potential for serious injury where if I were alone I might find myself in trouble? Sorry for asking...just trying to understand what the location is like - I've seen pics, but don't really know how far/wide people are walking to get to the location.
Thanks as always for your input.

I haven’t been, so I can’t be for certain, but I do know people who have and seen videos of the area. I think Jugglerguy has a video on his channel. But I think you would be perfectly fine to go on your own.

It does seem like it's a somewhat open area - but knowing my luck I'd fall in a hole and there'd be no one to help ha! I'll consider it - I just found out I need to take daughter to update her permit for driving school before monday so not sure it'll work out anyways. Ugh. Life really gets in the way of fun sometime.

I haven't been there...but I know some people who have been there...and I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night so...
I really don't believe there's any danger of falling in a hole...unless a person's walking around blindly texting on their phone...then they deserve to fall in a hole! LOL
There's a TON of pieces about the size of tumbling rough all over the place...in some of the holes...and all around the holes. A lot of people want pieces big enough to slab, or pieces big enough to work knapping projects...so they just leave the "smalls" laying all around.

You can't get lost and there's no reason you should get banged up unless you're breaking rocks. If you're just picking up rocks, you'd be perfectly safe.
Make sure they're open. I seem to remember seeing something recently that Mrs. Nethers' family is now running the place. I don't remember exactly where I saw this, or if it was even good information.

Sorry for asking...just trying to understand what the location is like - I've seen pics, but don't really know how far/wide people are walking to get to the location. Thanks as always for your input. When I was there maybe 4 or 5 years ago, I just parked off to the side of the driveway on the Nethers property. The dig site is right across the street so you only have to walk 100 or less yards before you start seeing the pits. I dont know how far back it goes, easily a few hundred yards more. There are shallow (3 - 6 feet deep) pits all over. The sides aren't steep so they are easy to get into and out of. Just have to take normal precautions. Tripping or falling down, dont undercut a steep wall etc. If you are going to be digging material out rather than just collecting loose pieces, gloves, goggles, hammer, pry bar. Dont forget to bring buckets for your finds! Here is a link that gives a good overview of the place: www.mcrocks.com/ftr10-1/StreeterSeptember2010.htmlThe article mentions "if you try to Mapquest or Google Map the location, you should use 3890 Flint Ridge Road, Hopewell Ohio - even though the actual address is 3680, 3890 will put you right on the driveway entrance to the farm." Using GPS to get there (and back out) is a good idea. It is a rural area with lots of small roads that you could get lost on.

I was just there with a friend last Thursday. I am 4 months removed from hip replacement surgery and I didn't have any problem. Didn't climb into any pits though, but I don't think I would have had any problems. The prices have increase from the YouTube videos I watched before going. It's now $10 per person and $1 per pound. Still a good price compared to buying it on-line.

Thank you realrockhound, jasoninsd, Jugglerguy, trexdgr, herb and khara (I'd totally take you up on that!) - It's amazing how plans change in a 24 hr span. My bailer decided they didn't need to bail after all and we set off at 9am Saturday morning! You all are right - there was no issue whatsoever and I would feel totally comfortable going solo if I needed to. Met some fun people - one of which was a flint knapper. I wasn't really sure what to expect as far as paying, checking in, etc so I asked one lady who told me the place was open to the public and you didn't need to pay. She actually told me that the people don't like it when you come to the house and not to bother them..uhhhhh. I don't think so lady. Everywhere I've read indicates you pay. She seemed quite shady, so I went to the other side where we met the knapper. He confirmed it's absolutely a pay site and confirmed the price had gone up (not a big deal whatsoever). To say flint is everywhere is a complete understatement. OMFreakingGoodness! Rob, you are correct, you wouldn't need to ever dig if you didn't want to. Thanks to the last minute change I completely forgot to bring my rock pick and chisels, but we remembered the shovels and hubby had tools in the car so we just compromised. Anyways. I'll share another post with pictures. Working on my cab entry for self collected. It won't be the prettiest sample I have, but it'll be something - when cutting on my saw the pieces just seem to break apart - I will have to find a studier chunk that isn't all fractured already. Have a great week!!

I'm anxious to see your pics too. I really like that material and have been trying to get some for a while. I did a trade with a member here a while back. I got several chunks but none if it is the real colorful stuff.

Have a great week!! Yeah, that was the biggest problem I had with what we collected. It's almost impossible to get a complete slab when cutting. Fortunately the resulting slablettes are big enough to be usable, especially if you do free form cabs.

Now that I have a better sense of what to expect we'll be doing some deeper digging when we return in the fall. Would be happy to share some if I'm successful!!

But you're right, I don't have to necessarily "template-shape" the cab - I can just work with what I have - great idea!

Hubby will have to help with the jackhammer if we go that route - I'm sure I'd look like a cartoon floppy trying to run one of those lol...next time for sure we will be much more prepared (I should say I will be much more prepared lol...hubbs was prepared).
