When I started selling on Etsy my plan was to make the hobby revenue neutral and I was able to do that for about three years. Sales are down but I kept buying. Finding great slabs at a good price is almost as fun as making cabs. I saw two nice slabs on Facebook for $50 so I bought them. I already have enough material to make a lot of cabs. I took my son's car to get serviced, no major repairs like engine or transmission and the bill was $3,000. I'm getting maintenance on mine and expect the bill to be over $1,000. Last year each cars service was around $100. This is the nature of owning older cars. Still cheaper than leasing since the older car still has a lot of use left and new cars are a lot more expensive.
Putting things in perspective, what I spend on slabs annually isn't very much.

And it obviously keeps you happy - if you add that to the equation, it's all priceless

I also enjoy the hunt. I haven't been buying any lately, but I look around every day... just in case.

I was getting a bit carried away buying slabs. I think I've got control of it now as I've started buying rough! My saw was delivered yesterday and I'm cutting slabs as we speak.

The other car was almost $2000. I guess I'll buy some more slabs.

Easier said than done. I have always had an interest in rocks and geology, made a couple of cabs at a rock club I was a member of for a while. When I started getting involved with tumbling with my granddaughter I swore I was not going to let things get out of control and I have pretty well held that line on equipment and stayed focused on tumbling, cabbing, and learning a little about jewelry making. Rough and slabs have been a bigger issue however.

You can't put a price on happiness and half the fun is the hunt!

I saw this faced thunderegg close to a pound and liked it. We're shopping in the same places. I saw that one earlier. Sweet egg. Did you get it?

stardiamond , have you been over to Cabs and Slabs the Slab Depot this morning? Tanner Singleton has a lot of stuff listed that's getting harder to find. I bought one of the 5 lots of Morrisonite as well as some red coral. Lot's of Larimar, Bruneau, Needles Blue rough, some Willow Creek and others. I missed out on a really nice looking slab of Rhodochrosite for $20 dollars that was sold when I got there. He has a slab in the new batch that was still available but lots of fractures.

I've bought six times from Tanner. Biggest was a $400 piece of Blue Dot chrysocolla. I check out his listings all the time. I am extremely particular buying and have a buying formula. I want the cab yield to be worth three times the cost of the material. The Bruneau is $35 and that is a good price for a specimen but it is a single cab slab and I would be lucky to break even. Ugly slabs that make nice cabs is what I look for. I have a 20 year history of buying bad Morrisonite from pictures.

First slab is polkadot and my bin included sensory overload. Second is stinkingwater. I prefer more water and less stink but I like to combine shipping.

The slabs arrived today. The Stinking water had more distinct plumes than the listing photo. Dry Wet

That second slab is nyedegger. I can spot that material from a mile a way. Considering you only paid $10 for it. You got a hell of a deal.

Thanks for the id. I did some searching and the material is rare. Not many cabs. I found a link to some Jason posted here.

Thanks for the id. I did some searching and the material is rare. Not many cabs. I found a link to some Jason posted here. I’ve personally dug it. My grandpa was also friends with the original people to dig it. I currently more than likely have the largest stock of it in existence. So I can confidently ID that material 😂
