You have a fabulous meteorite collection vegasjames ! I agree with victor1941 on the cat and bear (except I saw a frog). Too cool. Like Pat said, the pallasites are awesome. I have always loved and coveted those. I also really like (said in my most scientific vernacular) the polka dotty ones!  The "polka dot" ones would be chondrites, named for the silicate spheres in them known as chondrules. There are common chondrites and carbonaceous chondrites. |

Awesome collection James. I love collections of unusual things and is there a meteorite collectors society and if so, are you a member? How long have you been doing this? There are meteorite societies such as IMCA (International Meteorite Collectors Association), but I never applied to be a member. In my opinion it is like a good old boy's club. And I have had issues with a couple of the members including one I sent a meteorite to for him to sell for me that I never saw a dime, and another time I sent a large chink of what I am sure was some weird type of pallasite. The whole stone consisted of olivine and iron-nickel found just outside of Las Vegas. I sent him a nearly 80 gram piece. He did not get back to me so I finally wrote to him and asked him about it and he claimed it was not magnetic and threw it away. I checked it for magnetism as the first test and it was highly magnetic, and I tested for nickel which came back positive and is extremely rare in terrestrial rocks, so it was extremely likely to have been a rare meteorite. Also do not like how they want to sell their meteorites to me at retail, but when I posted some of my Tazas, I had a couple of members inquire about buying the, but they only wanted to pay wholesale. I am not a wholesaler. Same when I sent the 65 pounds of Gibeons to Arizona. He would only pay wholesale on most of them and less than wholesale on one cut one claiming it was "damaged", which is BS. Cut up meteorites sell for a lot more than whole ones. I just do not care for their lack of ethics. |

James, how do you store and/or display your collection? Don't have them displayed right now. When I moved I packed them up and do not have a place to display them right now.
Small enough ones go in those round, plastic holders. I write what they are on a very narrow piece of paper to fit along the wall or bottom of the container so I can read it without having to open them up.
Slightly larger pieces I put in Riker boxes with their ID.
Some I still have in zip lock bags, but irons especially I keep just is cardboard boxes so they do not trap moisture and rust.
