I'm a little surprised to see it up to $65 and it might not be done yet. 2.5 X 3.25 inches

It is beautiful. I really like the transparent parts. Just a little too rich for me.

Anyone think this is likely to be Indonesian Orbicular Jasper rather than Ocean Jasper from Madagascar?
Q: What about "Ocean Jasper" from Indonesia? A: The Indonesian orbicular material does indeed have similarities with a subset of Ocean Jasper, namely multiple-ringed spherulites and spherulite tails, vivid colors and translucency. A few example specimens are shown HERE. There is a concerted effort from dealers in Indonesia to brand their orbicular rock "Ocean Jasper", even though in the last 10 years the material has been sold by U.S. dealers under the name "River Jasper". Despite the similarities, this material is easily distinguishable from Ocean Jasper, as the Indonesian spherulites have a characteristic homogeneous oblate spherulite that is limited to a much smaller size, typically 2-3mm, and the zoning and pattern formations are far less complex or heterogenous.

Sure is beautiful, but what do people do with these more expensive slabs? Do they fetch a significant premium when cabbed that makes it worth it? Or is it just something people hold on to and [often] do nothing with because of its rarity?

That's a good question. I am leaning on OJ.

Or is it just something people hold on to and [often] do nothing with because of its rarity? When OJ was depleted, a concerted effort arose to preserve rough and slabs for the future and for study. For awhile there, it was frowned upon to cab it. That was due to the people studying it. It is certainly true that it is mined out and we know/knew very little about it.
Slabs and rough are valuable and will continue to rise. Collectors are buying slabs and rough more that cabs. I have quite a few slabs that I won't be cabbing. I just bought 2 that I bought just to cab. They are smaller slabs. Gemmy, yes, but cabbable.

I paid 95 for this. On the small side. I like the smaller orbs for cabs. This one I will cut.

rockbrain - I'm finally in the group and saw that piece of OJ. It was already too much for me even before the bidding got up that high. I thought I'd won a couple, but came on this morning to see I'm outbid. Makes it hard when I'm east coast and the auctions close Pacific time (I'm already snoozing by then lol)...

I'm going to make sure I pay attention this weekend to see if Brian R has anything going, but it's pretty hit or miss - especially the buy it nows.

I'm kinda infamous for winning an RTH auction by fencejumper. I got the time zones messed up and put in a 1000.00 bid for some slabs. Granted they were awesome slabs, but I was thinking it was like eBay and blew the time zone, too. DOH!

Paul was really cool about it. He swapped out some I didn't want for others that I did. It was a lot of slabs including a lot of MHPJ. I don't regret it. I think I figured that it was 30 a slab, which ain't bad.
eta Maybe not 30, but some of them were quite valuable- to me, at least.

Oh that's good!! Hey, as long as it's something you can use then it's worth it. There's a piece of Holly Blue that is priced at $25 starting, I think, but it's tiny. Like 1" x 3/4" x 3/4 " - after seeing how nice another member's tumbles were I considered it, but it's just not big enough to be worth my while - someone better could probably make an amazing cab out of it though...

That makes me think of my dog rescue transporting days - I would help transport rescue dogs to their new rescues/homes and would (without fail!) fall in love with one of them on every transport!! Dangerous way to end up with lots of doggos....not much different here - remove dogs, insert rocks ha!
