I realized I kind of avoid banded and especially fortified agates for cabs because I don’t like to cut through the bands!🤣 I always wonder how people decide where they are willing to chop them off.🤓 I guess this will be a good exercise for me.🙃

I too have a hard time disrupting the fortification area...and always want to leave it as intact as possible.

A cab certainly is more attractive and valuable when you ca get the whole pattern. I, too, have a problem cutting into them.

Banded agate goes brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrmmmm This is another, "can I see it from the outside"? There must have been a window somewhere.

realrockhoundJust meant how does it look before cutting as a whole rock. I'm always impressed you guys know what to look for. I was thinking you had a window, some of the agate showing on the outside. To the untrained eye and from that picture it looks like a big ugly rock.

Sometimes they do have windows, sometimes they dont. This is a thunderegg that comes out of one of my beds. You dig enough and are around things like this enough you can easily tell whats an egg and whats just sedimentary rock. Kinda har to explain, you just gotta do it enough to know what you're looking at. As far as cutting the right direction... same deal. Some have ridges to cut along that essentially tell you the best direction to cut, but lots of times they dont. Then at that point, you just examine what makes sense to what direction to cut and send it. To date, as far as i'm concerened, i've never cut an egg the wrong direction haha.

Son Of Beach come down here some weekend this summer and I’ll take you out to do some digging. Then you can become a professional at identifying what’s good and what leaverite.

Here's my entry, a Fairburn Agate that I cut from a rock that one of my sons gave me. He found it with a little pattern showing and cut it in half, finding this inside. A picture of the rock, my preform and the cab. I couldn't get a great picture of the cab with my new phone.

The cab looks great, capturing the fortification. It is fun to see how the patterns changes after grinding.

I don't usually comment on entries, but I have to say that is a sweet Fairburn! Thank you, my friend! Honestly, if I had found it I wouldn't have cabbed it. It polished up pretty well. Beautiful cab! Way to kick it off! Thank you, I appreciate it!

🤣 Thanks! He doesn't need to worry about me, however. He'll just have to cut up one of his better rocks that he's been stashing!
