I did pretty good today, but got stuck on 4 of them. So here we go again. First - a gorgeous plume - it has to be something, right?? 1. Maybe a jasper/agate - the whitish part is clear, and there's some purple towards the top. I first thought it looked like the lace agate from yesterday, but i don't really think it is, though it's similar. 2. Three - this is familiar and I probably should guess - but there's like blue green and purple in it... so I don't know. I wanted to say wonderstone - but then I stopped myself because I would end up being wrong! 3. Lovelock Jasper - thank you pebbleskyThis on was labeled mystery. So either he didn't know, or it's a location? 4.

For #2 the small translucent purple portions reminded me of Amethyst Sage Agate. Yellow jasper with black dendritic is also not rare in Amethyst Sage Agate. But I am not sure about these dominant dark grey/black areas.

3 is a rhyolite. Cannot tell you the location it is from though.

Thank you pebblesky for the lovelock jasper and the photo - I think it fits! I also had the same impression as you on the one with the purple having amy sage features. I also considered old Burro Creek - but haven't been able to confirm that yet. I realized in the description I mentioned the white being translucent - I didn't decribe that accurately. The large white areas are rockish and not translucent. Only the purple area and the white part of the crack (healed fracture) is translucent. I didn't think about there being more than one white area! vegasjames - thank you as well - I will find out if Lovelock is a rhyolite!

As is often done, the rhyolite is misidentified as a chalcedony such as a jasper. Another common example is "rainforest jasper", which is also a rhyolite and not a jasper.
Jasper is a chalcedony formed by the dehydration of opal. Rhyolites are formed from viscous, high silica lava flows. Some rhyolites, such as your specimen, have flow banding due to their being formed from slow moving lava flows, which is not seen in jaspers.
"Discover the vibrant beauty of Crayola Jasper from Lovelock, Nevada – a stunningly silicated Rhyolite, rich in diverse colors and mesmerizing patterns. Perfect for creating exquisite cabochons, its swirls of colors are a true testament to nature’s artistry."

It's helpful! Somtimes when I pick up a slab I'm unimpressed, then I wet it and I'm blown away. It's nice to hear when others also love something that I do - makes me feel like I'm starting to "get it." So I love that orange plume, I'm glad you like it too!
