I was there today, poppy jasper of all sizes, it was everywhere. A backhoe came rumbling down the hillside and there, right in front of me, dumped a full shovel on the rest of the pile. I'm talking about boulders weighing 200lbs+ all the way down to tumbling sized pieces. I stood back and slapped myself in the face, yep, I was awake! ;D I wish I had brought my camera. I can confirm that all the poppy jasper from Morgan Hill IS NOT mined out. There is still a lot of there.
Toad had bought some poppy jasper from an ebay seller not too long ago and I checked out their listings and saw they were located in Morgan Hill. So I contacted them and asked if I could come down in person to pick out some pieces and a day and time was set, and today was the day. Here's what I came home with.
When I got home I cut into some of the larger pieces and here's what I found.
And this one is really cool. It's got the poppies of the Morgan Hill type mixed in with poppies of the Gaudalupe type. The 2 locations are actually about 5 miles apart, yet here they are in one rock.
The people who live there are really nice and we talked for quite a while. They are going to be selling the house and 35 acres it sits on and they are doing all they can to dig up the vein of poppy jasper that runs through the property. I was talking to one of the guys who's doing the actual digging and he said the vein is huge and deep.
I brought a couple of MHPJ cabs and gave them to put on their auctions so people could see what the material looks like finished. They want me to make 3 necklace/earring sets for them and then after that, a bunch of earrings for all the grand daughters.
I've been in rock heaven for 2 weeks now, first WWR, and now the poppy jasper fields. Hmmm...I wonder where I'll wind up next week? ;D
