All I could say was holy %#$& when I saw this slab. Called Atlantisite (I know...a little on the storybook side for a name) it's serpentine & stitchtite and I guess comes from Tasmainia. It's absolutely staggering to me that this is made by mother earth & not man. thanks fer lookin!

Hey Liz, when I was in Tasmania a couple of months ago on holiday, my family and I stayed in a cabin in an old abandoned mining town named Corrina. Along with the care takers, we were the only ones in the entire town. It was preety cold by Aussie standards.
I got talking to a glrl who also worked with as a care taker and who also loved rocks and minerals. She told be about Atlantisite. It is only found in Tasmania and only on the West coast near the town of Zeehan, where she lived. Turned out some of her friends own one of the few mines where it is found.
When the girl came back to work, 2 days later, she bought some samples to show me. Most of what is mined is sent to China and Japan where it is used for carving. She showed me an Atlantisite bear that her friends had given her, which had been sent to them by one of their customers in China.
The girl then gave me 2 tumbled samples to keep for myself. I am looking at them right now. It is reasonably soft, I can scratch it with a key. It does not take up a high gloss polish but rather has more of a waxy shine to it. The black areas look like the "moss" in Moss Opalite.
Do you own the slab or is the picture off another website? I have never seen it for sale anywhere.
Hope you find this helpful and intereresting.
Mike

WOW Liz, how cool is that? Until now I thought I had some pretty cool Serpentine, but yours blows mine clear out of the water and a hundred miles inland. Please tell me it is yours and that it is in a safety deposit box in some bank.

A photo of this needs to go into the Rock Identification Board for future reference. It is seriously gorgeous!

Once again Mother Nature proofs that she is the best in color combinations.

yup...what Adrian said! Yes...It's mine....all mine! Seller on e-bay was ivanwalker. His store is Radiant Rocks CT. It's a 7 oz slab & with shipping, was about $18. That's really steep, I know, but I'm going to keep it as specimen. Mike...from what I've read...you got the proper scoop! www.openallday.au.com/StitchSerp.htmlI went looking & found this website. They have alot of carved things for sale. Says mohs is around 4, so I can see where it's not gonna get a top of the line polish. Did a search on e-bay & found a few other items. (13) Also...like most other rough, there is a range of grading. Thank you bunches for your info!

Purple & acid green - what a fantastic combination- and no I don't think the price is steep - it's kinda cheap compared to some others
I'm assuming it's kinda softish right? Can I marry that slab!?
