Here is the filler material I used when tumbling that one pound piece of Stone Canyon Jasper that I posted a day or two ago. These are tiny purple garnets from India, pea-size or smaller (note the quarter for scale). Since the SCJ chunk was very large, using lots of smaller material helped average out the size of material in the barrel. Well, that's my theory anyhow. The garnets tumble up nicely and are transparent but quite dark purple. To show off their purple hue I think they will need to be displayed in a container in a sunny window or other bright area. Some pics (all pics taken with stones dry): Rough garnets: Polished garnets: I needed lots of these little garnets for a 6 lb barrel while the big piece of Stone Canyon jasper tumbled for 60 days. The garnets are quite dark, so when placed in a pile in a shady window they look almost like a batch of purplish obsidian: Spread that pile out, and the purplish transparency becomes obvious, even in the shade: Take the pics with a camera flash, and the purple garnets really show off their color: And a final close-up (taken in a shady window) to round things out. Thanks for looking, -Don

Those would look great in a suncatcher - they look like pomegranite seeds - they look absolutely yummy, you make it sound so easy! *sigh*

Awesome looking garnets! I have tumbled some BC garnets before but they were not as nice and consistent as those are in color, density & transparency. Any transparent stones that are too small to do anything else with would make good fodder for "gem stone vials". I've always wanted to figure out something better to do with the smallest stones besides feeding them back into the tumbler. I only have a small amount of those garnets though, maybe enough to fill that quarter a half inch deep, and like i said, they vary alot from each other.

Thanks for the compliments! I'm almost certain these came from Ron's Rocks. I got them as a couple of separate "Buy it Now" auctions -- $14.99 for 3 lbs, per auction. -Don

Just to be clear... it was the big chunk of stone canyon jasper that took 60 days in coarse grind. The garnets that were in with it each took only one cycle of coarse grind (7-8 days) to shape up in coarse. But I made numerous additions of garnets and other stuff during the 60 days the SCJ tumbled, removing the smaller stuff as it shaped up. -Don
