All,
I am wanting to start tumbling something a bit unusual, something other than that which I have already done.
Can anyone recommend a good type of stone which you have done, got a smooth shine, and which you dont come across very often?
Looking for ideas, Cheers

Hi Andrew, What type of rocks have you already tumbled. Agates and jaspers come in so many different colors and patterns and tumble well. You can also tumble obsidian but I've been told to use obsidian gathered from the same site (or from the same large rock. Chalcedony, an opaque form of quartz, also tumles well. I've usually seen jewelry made from light blue chalcedony, but it is more commonly white, sometimes with nice banding. I bought a bucket of opaque light pink rock which I think is chalcedony and plan to tumble it once I've had more pratice. I'm not sure how well onyx tumbles. Has anyone ever tried? I was given a bag of crappy emerald rough. It looked mean. Having nothing to do with it, I did not really look forward to making cabs., I tossed it into the tumbler. Wow!! I am looking forward to making rings from this. We will see if it sells. After the first tumble, I found some gem quality I have set aside for the faceter we have. The coolest stuff is with inclusions, white and black. These pieces of toss out were definately changed by tumbling!
