Greetings All,
Much thanks Don, for posting the pictures. According to Gerdus, the man who assembled this fine collection of rocks, he rejected several hundred kilograms in order to send me his very best material. I forgot to ask him though if I was going to be getting a free cell phone with my purchase ;D

No problem William, my pleasure. Gerdus seems like a nice guy, I have been in contact with him also. He put together a sample batch of different materials for me to test for knapping, he was very helpful. 30KG of mixed rock is headed my way via surface mail (2 to 3 months). If any of it is suitable for my needs, I'll probably go the 1000kg sea freight route also. Thanks for finding his site and sharing it with us, later, Don

Greetings All, Gee Don, you mean that Gerdus will sell rough by the kilogram as well as by the ton Silly me, rushing right into the big purchase before trying out some samples first. Well, at least I've saved up enough to pay for most of the cost, and I will have it all paid for by the time it actually arrives. Oh yes, my wife bought the sofa she's been wanting on Friday, it was delivered yesterday. Big sectional thing too, takes up half the den. It's not as if I'm planning to bring the rocks inside, well, that's not entirely true, when I sort and grade them before putting them into the next stage I do it in the den. But NEVER on the new sofa ;D William C

Hehe, I wish it were Noah, LOL. William, I think you are doing the right thing. I trust Gerdus, and the savings are huge ordering the large quanitys compared to the small test sample I am getting. The difference for me is that not all of the rock will be suitable for knapping, while I'm sure all of it will be perfect for tumbling and other lapidary uses. I usually only tumble the waste from knapping arrowheads , rock that is high in silica, has concoital fracturing properties and will take heat treating if necessary to lower the hardness. So you can see that my use for the rock requires a little more discretion. Plus William, the rock will only go up in value over time. A small piece of flint that sells for $3 or $4 today would have only been $0.50 7 years ago. Like I said, I think you are on the right track buddy. I should start shopping for my wife before I look into the 1000kg lots too I guess, smart move ;D Later all, Don

Greetings All, THE ROCKS ARE COMING, THE ROCKS ARE COMING!!! Just got an email from Gerdus and off the phone with my customs broker. The good ship Saf Tugela is due to arrive in New York next week. Among it's cargo will be MY ROCKS ;D From New York the rocks will be trucked to Mobile, AL (hell had I known that I'd have had them trucked to Senatobia in the first place, well maybe next time). So as early as next weekend but more likely the following weekend I'll be heading down to get my 4,400 lbs of rough. And then...well I sure don't know what to do with 4,400 lbs of rocks, but my tumblers will never be idle again. I'll have to really think about getting a big lot of grit now, but I think I'll forgo buying the sodalite from the rockshed.com, unless they want to trade for it that is Anyway, I'll keep ya'll posted, and I'll keep posting. To anyone out there wanting to trade or buy something let me know, I'll soon be ready. Happy Tumbling! WilliamC

Greetings All, Monday I should be picking up the rocks. I'm having to rent a 24-foot Uhaul, because that's the smallest that's rated for over 4,000 pounds. I should have them back at my house next week, then I have to figure out how to get them OUT of the truck and where to put them, but other than that I'll be ready to start trading rough for rough. I've given a lot of though to this and for now I'd rather trade, since if I tried to sell rough for money I'd have to make it a business and involve the government. But trading rough for rough shouldn't involve the taxman. So, thanks to downrob the pictures of the rocks I'll be wanting to trade are in this link, I'll be wanting to trade 10 lb and up lots of rough for rough. I'm pretty much interested in anything, and as for details get in touch and we can work on them. The price list for these rocks can be found at mineralgallery.co.za on the rough in bulk page, this is what it would cost if you were to buy them in the same quantity as I did, assuming Gerdus hasn't changed the price. Of course I paid lot's of other charges to actually get the rocks to my house and I am NOT IMPLYING this is the price in trade I am setting on the rocks. I HAVE NOT weighed the rocks for instance, so I don't really even know yet if I have what I'm supposed to have. I'm just providing the prices below to save people from having to look it up on the website and calculate yourself. Autumn jasper $1,350 per metric ton = $0.6163 per pound Verdite $1,100 per metric ton = $0.5 per pound Leopard stone jasper $1,100 per metric ton = $0.5 per pound koi jasper $1,400 per metric ton = $ 0.6363 per pound Large carnelian agate $1,300 per metric ton = $0.5909 per pound butterjade $1,600 per metric ton = $0.7272 per pound While I am not looking to make a huge profit from trading rough (if I wanted to do that I'd start a small business, and perhaps someday I will but not through this message board but through ebay) I am looking to trade more on a weight to weight basis rather than a dollar-value to dollar-value basis. As for amounts I'm imagining most people are interested in small 5 to 10 pound trades, so to some extent I'm willing to take small chances on not being incredibly happy with a trade if I only put out for me a small bit of rock. But if I trade with someone and get some rock I really like then larger amounts are definitely a possibility. Of course shipping costs soon mount up and as long as I'm doing this without trying to make a profit the shipping costs I pay come out of my paycheck, so that will limit the number of and amount of transactions I can do at any one time. So, with all that said, who's got some rocks they want to swap ;D I'd really like to get some rose quartz and some amethyst, and maybe some sodalite, some adventurine (any color), some different kinds of jasper and agate, ah shucks, I want them all WilliamC

Well William, I'm here in Arizona and I think I can get quartz by the boxcar load. Rose quartz, I've got to hunt a little harder to get. But there's a lot of it here. I'm scouting out an abandoned amythist mine later this month. Agate, and Jasper I can get and even clean it up a bit for a trade. So what ever I get in the next couple of weeks, I'll identify, and inform you know what I have. I'd send you some pics via e-mail before I shipped any out to you. Since I'm not quite as experienced as others at this, I would mail the rock to you first. I'd pay shipping and let you look it over. If you like it, you could send some of what you have to me, in what ever amount you felt was fair. Does something like that seem reasonable? -Banjo-

Greetings All,
The rocks are at my house. I drove the UHaul for 12 hours Monday to get home at 1:30 A.M., then unloaded the rocks from 6 large barrels onto the floor of the truck, then to the side of my house Wednesday morning. There were only a couple of pieces that were almost too big for me to lift, but I managed. They look exactly like the rocks in the pictures, I can recognize some of the boulders. And boulders they are. Except for the carnelian, of which I have a few hundred pieces, the rest are in quite large boulders that really really make me want to buy a slab saw. They are too nice to sledge hammer. Oh I'll start busting some up over the next few days but I'm really thinking of a 14 inch saw. We'll see.
My computer at home is a bit strange, at least when I log onto this website I loose my login when I change pages. I'll have to check my cookies or something to make sure I can post to the board from home. Right now I'm at work and gotta allota things going on, but I'll respond to whomever has already emailed me about setting up some trades later on.
Oh yes, and I will get some film and take pictures soon, I promise.

Greetings All, Hey Banjocreek, as soon as you have something email me and I'll send you my address. Maybe send me 10 lbs of whatever agate, jasper, and rose quartz you have and I'll decide if I want more of one thing or another. When I get your package I'll send out a piece of the carnelian, I'm sure I can find one weighing not much over 10 lbs just as it is. Hummm....I really have to get some scales now WilliamC

Hey William, glad things are working out okay. I had the same problem with losing my id when I changed pages. I had to drop the Privacy setting in "Internet Options" to Medium High. When I was set to High, I had the same problem as you.
