I've posted this one link before, but there is now a second site where you can access free on-line topograpic maps and aerial photos. These can be very helpful in tracking down good places to hunt for rocks. They also show such things as old gravel pits and old mines. Ron terraserver.microsoft.com/default.aspxtopozone.com/

That's SO cool! I found an aerial photo taken in 1995 that included my property. My son wanted to know if we could zoom in enough to see if any of us were at home when the photo was taken. We weren't able to zoom in quite close enough for that! HAHA!
Ron, thanks for sharing those sites!

You can indeed see if you are "in". At a sub-meter resolution you can clearly see your car. Sub-meter requires a subscription though.

Thank you! Have not thought about using Aerial photos. Maybe I can now find some mystery spots. Juniper

If you've never tried this site before...be prepared to be blown a-w-a-y... go to google earth, download free software, enter your city and state, then "Whoa!" Be sure to play with allllllll the controls!

I have been playing around with this for a couple of years. It is free software from NASA and it is awesome! From the website: "World Wind lets you zoom from satellite altitude into any place on Earth. Leveraging Landsat satellite imagery and Shuttle Radar Topography Mission data, World Wind lets you experience Earth terrain in visually rich 3D, just as if you were really there. Virtually visit any place in the world. Look across the Andes, into the Grand Canyon, over the Alps, or along the African Sahara." The site: worldwind.arc.nasa.gov/They also have topo overlays, so when you are looking at a infrared image of Mt. St. Helens you can click a button and it will lay a topo over it. As well as USGS overlays, LANDSAT7, MODIS and more. PS I totally geek out over maps as you may have noticed. Mike
