Hi All, Please can anyone tell me the speed a horizontal lap runs at ? (so as not to sling the grit off) Im on making one at present and working on the pulley sizes. Thanks Jack Yorkshire UK

Jack - The commercial laps I've seen use a pan with sides on it, like a frying pan, but they vibrate and don't rotate.
Another type that does rotate (Crystal Master by Crystalite Corp) uses wheels of varying grit size, like a cabbing machine, so there's no grit to sling around.
I would think you definitely want something on the slow side for a homemade machine. I'm thinking of building one myself, like a modified record turntable. 33 - 45 - 78 rpm. Would love to see pics of what you've got so far. What are you using for a pan?

Just another idea jack but if you use a higher speed motor you could use a high power lighting dimmer switch to control the speed, and if you wanted to know what rpm it is running at you could incorporate a tachometer somehow

Hi Chris,
Thanks for the help Im not to worried about a acurate speed its just at what speed a table spins off the grit/ water mixture,
I guess I will have to do it the trial and error way.
Have a good w/e we are freezing over here quite a change from two weeks ago ! Jack Yorkshire UK

Hi Jack, Something you might want to consider is adding a "wiper blade" to the side of the pan. This will help to force the grit back onto the working surface of your circular disc as it rotates. I made this simple drawing to show the basic idea but the "wiper blade" can be attached in many different ways. If you are interested in this idea drop me an email and i'll help you design it. thomas_kuzia@sbcglobal.net Tom
