About 9:30 this morning, I had this nice 8 point buck and the doe he was "courting" in my backyard. I tried to get the patio door open when he was right by my deck, but he looked at me and wandered a little further away. Of course my dog was barking her fool head off. Him and his doe hung around and browsed of the brush for about 20 minutes before moving on. Summer before last, I had a doe get chased into my back yard, and between mine and the two neighbors to the south, she spent the summer there. Of course, every time she came down to my yard, my dog had something to say about it. Ron ps. Hunting season is open here and it would have been legal for me to shoot him. But that's not what hunting is supposed to be all about!

You are right, what a privilege to see. You are right about hunting. I am an avid hunter, when the need arises. Right now, there is no need. When there is, I am careful, selective, and many times passed up and went hungry. Being able to see deer, and other animals just being themselves without fear, that is a feeling without words. Thank you for sharing your joy. It means a lot.

unfortunately, we seem to have an overpopulation problem the past few years and i have tribes of the dam (majestic) beasts camping out in my yard eating all and sundry bushes, shrubs and even nibbling at the bird feeders. they are pretty, but they can become pests in short order.
nice photos, Ron, good posting!

As much as I grumble at the deer all summer and fall in my yard for mowing down my trees, shrubs and gardens, it sure is nice to see them this time of the year, and to see who survived the hunting season.
Nice pictures, hope they make it through your hunting season.

That's a nice lookin' buck! Probably some good eatin' too! I just love watching the deer. We have tons of them around here, although, I haven't seen them lately. I haven't been throwing out as much corn for them and since it's hunting season, they make themselves pretty scarce. I haven't seen Big Buck and his brother lately and sure will be sad if somebody got them. Big Buck has been around here as long as I have lived here, so I think he's pretty savvy about those hunters! Hope so anyway! I just love all the wildlife around here - esp the squirrels! They are such busybodies. KD, I think there is an overpopulation of deer almost everywhere. As much as I love to just sit and watch them, I really hate them when I am going somewhere! It's dodge the deer and it doesn't matter if it's day or night! Many years ago, one rarely saw them along the highway during the day, now they are everywhere! llana

I was coming back from my daughters last night and a doe jumped up on the road in front of me. I was far enough away not to worry but she stopped and looked behind her so I slowed way down. Sure enough, I got to about 20 feet away from her, she jumped down into the ditch and a big buck came up on the road from behind her. He didn't even look at me, seemed to have only one thing on his mind. If I hadn't slowed down, I'd have had a nice one, even though I don't hunt ... not to mention what he'd have done to my car. Great pics Ron! I get lots of them in my yard here too during summer and up to hunting season. They disappear then and I always wonder if they got shot. Cher PS ... Llana, those are cool looking deer, what kind are they?

Correct me if I'm wrong, Llana, but those look like Axis deer.

Yep, they are Axis. We have tons of them here, also tons of whitetails. The day I took that pic I had come home to find 20 Axis doe with 3 fawns grazing right across from my RV. They dispersed when I got out of the truck - didn't run, just slowly wandered off in various directions. Walked past the window a few minutes later and there was Big Buck and his pal. Grabbed the camera and couldn't believe he just stood there and looked at me while I took a number of pics. He is beautiful, isn't he? Hope a hunter or car/truck hasn't gotten him since that pic was taken.
My nephew shot an Axis buck about the same size from my sister's front porch Thanksgiving eve. They are sure good eating, but I missed out on it because he didn't even offer me a package of meat!!
