I know, how could I even mention the possibility of other interests besides rocks. But face it, we all have them. I would be curious to hear or see photos of other members talents/interests/hobbies. Mine would be motorcycles. My husband and I spend as much of our free time as possible riding. We are also members of the Patriot Guard Riders and we attend as many military funerals as we can. Regardless of political beliefs, we believe in paying respects to those that fought for our country. We have dirt bikes, I have a Honda Ruckus scooter (yes, Im admitting it) and my husband has a Harley Davidson Dyna Superglide. I love riding with him but have been wanting a bike of my own. For me, we are currently restoring/modifying a 1965 Harley/Aermacchi Sprint into a hardtail bobber. Here are a few photos: Jay's bike My project bike Me working on the frame So.........what are YOUR other interests in life? After all, this is the Life, Universe And Everything sub-forum. ;D Shannon

This looks like it's going to be an interesting thread! I have enjoyed the posts so far. I have been rebuilding a 1960 VW Karmann Ghia (see how my online name fits?). It's drivable, but I still have the interior to finish off. Most of my time lately has been getting all of the mechanical aspects in order before tackling the interior. Here is one photo (click for a larger one). See my web page below in my signature for a few more photos of it. I also do photography. (very nice photos, LCARS!). I used to have a darkroom and did my own processing, even some color work. However, now with digital, I have dismantled the darkroom. I don't remember the last time I actually bought a roll of film. I seem to do well in landscape/scenery photos. Here is one example of many. It's Nymph Lake in Rocky Mountain Nat'l park, CO. Click for larger photo. I'm also a railroad nut and a model railroad guy. See web page below in my signature for RR photos. I have ridden trains across Canada from Toronto to Vancouver. Wyoming to Chicago and Chicago to Washington, DC, and many shorter trips. The best may have been the Algoma Central RR out of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario north for 300 miles. Also Frankfurt - Nuremberg, Germany, which my fastest ride, 180 kph (112 mph). Also have been enjoying Geocaching for about a year and a half now (thanks to LCARS!).

LCARS! It was so great to see your mushroom and fungus photos. My "other" collection is bones, fungi and mushrooms. I have trunks FULL of dried mushrooms and fungi attached to dead branches. Bunches of conks, or shelf fungus. I think they are beautiful. I have photos too but Im not sure where. I have photographed shaggy manes but did not know what they were called!
And bones.......I have an absolute fetish for bones. Not fossil bones but ummm, fresh bones. My husband set up a bone box for me in the corner of our property for the purpose of allowing carcasses to decompose so that I can keep the bones. I have chests full of bones and skulls in my house as well. I drag home carcasses during hunting season and bury them then dig them up the following year. Not sure what I will do with the bones, I just like them. There is just something fascinating about holding bones in your hands that enabled a creature to move and live.

Oh my God Shannon!!! That's Gross!!!! But it made me remember how last year, me & Mojo went for a drive towards Mt. St, Helens and we stopped at Lake Merwin. As I was crawling over rocks & fallen trees, I turned around to go back & screamed my fool head off cause THERE was partially eaten deer carcass I almost stepped on! Poor Mojo had never seen me jump like that before & I scared the CRAP outta him too! Most of it's head was gone, I imagine drug off into the wilderness by some carnivore, but I did manage to make out part of a jawbone among other sundry items. I guess I was so startled cause a womans body had turned up relatively close to where I was & it was just plain scary! Hey Rob...I think I found a stash of wild Morels around the college where I walk last spring. they look identical to pics I've seen but I was leary to pick as I've heard there's some poisoned ones that are similar.

Shannon as you know from PM and other rock boards,my passion is history and going with that I began collecting history. One result of the area I collect(WW2),I began helping veterans in any way I can.I also record thier stories. Heck there is not much I don't collect.Coins, stamps,Kachina dolls, militaria, glass, pottery, antiques, etc. I am an collecting addict.I have very little artistic talent, but I do use animal skulls as a canvas.Last I like having pets no cats or dogs, just reptiles, birds and fish. Here are a few historical artifacts I have all have provenance out the wazzoo, you don't collect this kind of stuff without provenance. If anyone wants more detail of these items please feel free to pm me.First up one of my skulls recently finished. The beads are Turquoise, ivory and copper.......... A period NASA press photo of Cmdr Dave Scott;Aopllo 15 at Hadley rille,July 1971. While living in New Mexico,I aquired this 2nd Marine Div tunic from a Navajo Code Talker. No I am not a Nazi, one veteran I grew to know sold me the booty he brought back from Germany. The booty was 46 pieces of Adolf Hitlers personal silver service. Here is a fork. Enough for now, Brad

Wow Brad.........those photos are amazing! I am sure those are just a microscopic part of your entire collection. Feel free to post more, I would love to see them. Liz, Lake Merwin is where we had our nude wedding LOL. Maybe the deer's head was gone because I took it. ;D I know, my mom thinks Im gross too. I dont collect them because of the gross factor. I cant explain it. They were once part of a living animal and that makes them special. Im sure most dont see it that way but I never admitted to being like most. Its great hearing about everyone's interests. Shannon

As some of you might have guessed from my earlier posts about a fossil leatherback turtle, I am an avid fossil collector and have been digging fossils for a little over 40 years now in coastal S.C. At one time I accumulated a huge private collection, but over the last 20 years now I have been working as a volunteer with the S.C. State Museum, helping to build a representative collection of fossils from South Carolina. Most of the best stuff from my collection is in museums now...<sigh> For the past four years, I have been helping in an excavation of a major, ice aged site (450,000 years old) at a local quarry. Here is a link to a web page I created (slightly out of date but still mostly accurate) telling all about the site and loaded with photos, if anyone is interested: vancethefossilhunter.com/ My other interests include everything to do with natural history, politics, online jigsaw puzzles, and a fledgling attempt at writing a book of cartoons about dinosaurs, cavemen...anything to do with paleontology. I am about half way there, with 150 cartoons stored so far. Time will tell if this is a pipe dream, though. Lapidary is where it is at for now, though. I am addicted to anything with beautiful patterns, colors, textures, etc... I guess that's why in the real world, I am a painting contractor, hah! Well, that's about it in a nutshell. I love this thread! I hope everyone will jump in and tell a bit about their interests. Vance

As my name implies I do a fair amount of woodturning and consider myself an up intermediate turner. I am in the process of updating my website and hope to have it done soon. I haven't updated it for 2 years so I have a few dozen pieces to put up there.
Evening college is my main hobby, if you can call it that. I spend 2 nights a week in class and several hours each weekend doing homework, way more time than I spend doing anything else. Only 2 years left (6 under my belt).
I also like to do origami. It just amazes me to take a square piece of paper and make amazing shapes from it. I've gone to my daughter's school the last two years to teach it to the kids. Its great to see their faces when they make something.
I also have a small collection of figurative cast iron bottle openers from the early 1900's. The collection is slow growing since they are rare, very expensive and its difficult to tell the difference between old ones and new knockoffs.

Besides rocks, this is another of my interests. I think it goes well with rock hounding because this is what i do when I'm in the great outdoors. Be easy on me. It's my first time doing this. Condor This is a Martin D-28 This is the Condor attempting to play an old Stephen Stills song.

Wow AH those are flat out awsome. My wife makes beaded jewelry and buys these sometimes. Most are way too expensive though. We have a local glass works that we like to go to watch the people work. They do some beads so I know how long it takes to make just one. They also do a lot of other glass work and all of it is just amazing to watch. You are obviously very talented.

for years and years we autocrossed (dat me) almost every weekend, did a lot out your way, too, Stefan: but, due to health and (lack of) wealth reasons, we haven't done any racing for a long while. i like to garden (dis is part of my yard): but, for the most part these days, i'm totally consumed with rocks and making jewelry and stuff out of rocks.
