A bone?

Found this in the water in front of our house the other day. Any clue if it is a bone and if so,what kind? I was thinking a backbone maybe. Forgot to put a coin in for size, but it is about 2 inches across. What do you think? (This is my first attempt at the Photobucket thing, so I hope we did it right.) CQ

Nope structure doesn't look like bone. I'd say it's a nice specimen of horn coral...mel

Hey Carp, I would have thought the same as you! Isn't it amazing what the people around here know?

Thanks Mel for the ID. I did some more research and, indeed, it looks like a horn coral. Kind of disappointed, though, because I thought I had an ancient bone of some sort. The knowledge within this forum is wonderful!

CQ: You're very welcome. *L* I just can't help myself when it comes to Identifying rocks. I'm downright compulsive about it. You live in a fine region for many types of corals. Most are somewhat soft for tumbling but polish up real well on wheels and make fascinating gems....mel

cq, I havn't been reading much lately just trying to catch up put I agree with mel you have a piece of horn coral cut cross wise and polished on wheels and they turn out good. by the way bruce at cand m rock shop has his new book out LAKE MICIGAN ROCK PICKING I just got a copy it gives alot of in sight about rocks in the area well worth the $15 dollars (i think bought some stones at the same time) he is also going to be our feature program in September.
