After looking at these pics I'm putting a bunch of my tumbles back into stage one.
How do you get lagunas so smooth? Mine come in such irregular shapes!

I would so love to know how you got that labradorite to look so good. Mine looks cracked and ugly no matter what I do.

I would be so excited to get my chrysoprase to look anything close to yours. Any tips would be appreciated.

Just ran across this, James. Yikes, that's high praise to be lumped in here with some masterful work. Not quite earned yet, there are definitely some AMAZING tumbles with tough material in this thread. But thanks for the compliment! Randy

Tumbling is rather bottom line. It's either right or wrong. Experience means a lot but results is the final line. Apparently you dialed it in cause you have fine tumbles. I don't know, you may have been tumbling for many years. For some reason I thought you were new to it.

Been at it since last Christmas, jamesp, when I got my boys a Lortone 33B. Best Christmas present they ever got, IMO. Of course, the rest of the equipment since then has been my present to myself.

I thought you were new to tumbling. Well done. Fast learner. The right equipment. All else will take care of itself.

Oh boy! I've not been doing anything with rocks for years and after looking at this thread again, I am glad I decided to visit the forum because I knew it would get me motivated to get started tumbling again. I remember those awesome tumbles. And the new ones I haven't seen that Don posted are incredible too! My eyes are hurtin' from lookin' at the shine!

These tumbles are the most perfect that I have ever seen The red horn coral and Biggs were totally awesome. Huge thank you and hat off to Don's skill, patience and perseverance to have attained his level.

I love this thread; I am on day three of my first batch and probably have read through Rollingstone's recipe three times to create a hybrid between the Lortone instructions and his. The rock store in my city sells a coarser blend for stage one; I am hopefully optimistic that it will speed up the stage for me. Thank you for the inspirational photos and an immense goal for myself to work towards!

ETA: Having a hard time eliciting what I was trying to say.
In general, more coarse can be better, but it may not be a HUGE time saver at the end of the day. If you're looking for "perfect" shaping in the first course, you're going to be tumbling for weeks, if not months. If your grit is breaking down completely, then you're on the right track. You have a local source...that's great. Have you priced on-line? Depending on what you're doing, the 'net might offer some savings.
Welcome to the forum.

Well, looks like this is the end of the line for all the pics in this thread. This week, Photobucket began demanding a $400 per year "upgrade" fee to allow pics to appear in 3rd party websites such as RTH. That's not going to happen for this boy! I can afford the $400 per year, but the principle of it is completely unacceptable to me. I will wait a few months to see if they back down on their ransom demands, and if they don't, then I will delete all my photos plus my Photobucket account. -Don

I see photos in many other threads remain intact... what photo-hosting sites are people using for those. Particularly sites that aren't charging $400 per year.

Photobucket has really made a mess of things.

I hope flickr does not pull this stunt. Photobucket has always been an ill functioning software with my Mac.
Store your photos on personal back up folks.
5 stars for flickr for 15,000 photos. Never had an issue except short shut down periods when they were working on modifications.

Same thing happened over to a tractor site I was on alot of people were using Photobucket and if Bucked everything up! They have over 16,500 members they elected to go with all pictures uploaded to the forum it automatically resizes them to proper size. They also went to a support system people can donate to the forum 1 year 2 year 5 year or lifetime to help pay for the cost. You get a badge next to your name. I go by Horsefixer here is a thread I started I was building a Front End Loader for one of my tractors. Ill get back to it one of these days. www.wheelhorseforum.com/topic/68968-ark-500-loader-rebuild-on-a-522xi/?page=6

Wow, this is kind of exciting... I haven't been on this site in probably over a year (I do post on the Facebook site from time to time), and now I see my previously blocked photos on page 2 and 3 of this thread seem to be back again! Did Photobucket have a change of heart? Is this something visible only to me since I posted the pics? I'm not sure what's going on, but I'm happy to see the photos have returned and I'm glad I was too lazy to delete the photos off my Photobucket account and then delete the account, like I had originally intended.
I see that there is a new upload feature for this site, so let me try it out with this pic.... oops, not working, I guess I have to sign up for a third party site to enable it?

Don, I’d consider it a temporary reprieve . . . a chance you might consider their latest, lower-priced options, figuring that initial blast of anger’s cooled off some over time. It’s also possible Tommy put the fix on your pics.
