Thanks for the photos, Adrian! Next time around, would you try cutting the groove before working the cab? (I know this last one was a tumbled stone, so that wouldn't work).

I've looked at many wraps and other ways to mount cabs. I especially like what you've done here because the focus is on the stone, not the wrapping. We're all craftsmen, artists, admirers, etc. of finished pieces. What we are, before anything else, is rockhounds. We love the possibilities and beauty of the stone. You've captured it perfectly.

I did this! After looking at Adrian's example, I decided to try this method on a couple of my turquoise pieces. I really prefer to use a prong method on them rather than a full-on wire wrap because a) I like to see as much of the stone as possible and b) I'm just not THAT good at it yet. I tried Adrian's new way using a Dremel tool with a little diamond saw blade. It worked really well. I need to get a camera - I have no pics, but it turned out nice. Turquoise is really soft, though. I'm going to try it on some of my other stones when I get them out of the tumbler.
I really need to invest in a camera.....I want to play too! Turq

Glad to hear I was a source of inspiration for you, Turq! Get a camera as soon as possible!

Yeah, I do need a camera! The only way I was able to post a pic of some of my turquoise was with my scanner, and it really didn't turn out all that bad. It's back in the General section under "Workforce Saw from Home Depot" thread. I have no idea how to make a link to that to show you. It was in January. And by the way, it never even occurred to me to draw a line around the stone first. That sure would have made it easier! I often do things the hard way. Sigh.

Adrian – Bought this cab for my wife at the East Coast Gem Show in 2006. Had it wrapped the same day by Jim Fowler Wire Wrapping. Grooved freehand with a Foredom, and the girdle is under 3mm. I’m sure I’ll see him again at this year’s show in two weeks. You can bet your bottom Leu I’ll be asking him how long he’s had this style in his repertoire. ;D And where he first saw it.

Beautiful cab and pendant, Rich. Thanks for posting, it's not only beautiful but also proofs there's no more room for inventing the wheel here. I never had a doubt this system was used before, and I wouldn't wander if I'd find out it's used since long times ago.

What a pretty wrap. For a sec there I thought it was some kind of a flashback..

I tried cutting the groove with a 4" trim saw blade but am not quite steady handed enough to have the guts to try it on polished cabs so want to know what that tool was that had the cutting bit on the side of the work table. Retailed about $50-60 and the bits were about $25. It was discussed about 4 - 6 weeks ago but couldn't find it again. For now, my cabs will be grooved pre-polish. Thanks for the idea Adrian. Rusty

Gryphon/Gryphette diamond grinder. Its primary use is for working with stained glass.
