Husband came home from work at Home Depot the other morning - he does inventory control - and said that the WF Tile Saw has become "inactive". This could mean a couple of different things: They may be yet again changing it (I think it was mainly just the color before) or they could be discontinuing it altogether. Right now he has none in stock in our town's store, but there are a couple left in surrounding town's stores and what ever is left in other local stores is all there will be for now. No reorder. Jeepers! I'm glad I just picked up a used one on eBay.
So, dumb question time: what are the signs that tell you it's time to replace the blade? What's the best replacement blade?

I'm sure they won't discontinue any blades, because the 7" diamond blade - whichever brand you prefer - is used on many models of tile saws. I'm not sure, but Lowes' probably has their own version. Home Depot sells both the MK Hot Dog blade and their Rigid brand as well. Both of these are better than the blade that comes with the WF saw. That blade is very thick, and although it will cut through rock, you lose a lot of material. I also found it wasn't very effective for cutting shapes. There is only about a $5 difference in price between the MK Hot Dog and the Rigid. I've used 2 or 3 of each, and I find them both about the same, but the MK seems to last a bit longer and is slightly thinner. I'll probably just spend the extra and buy the MK from now on. Indigoace - I just plain use the blade until it won't cut through rock any more. You'll know the moment - the blade goes from being a blade to just being a disk of metal. I keep any older blades around if there is any abrasive edge left at all. They are good for grinding edges of shapes as I don't have a grinder yet. Just another hint - Some Home Depot stores keep their replacement blades in the "Tool Rental" section of the store, as they consider this a "high-end" item. Our store doesn't do this (they just keep them in the "tool corral" area with all the other replacement products) but I found out that both stores in the towns near us do.

Thanks for the heads up on the saw. HD doesn't list it on the web site anymore. I snagged one of the 2 remaining units at a nearby store in Minneapolis. There are probably still a few left in the Twin Cities.
Our local stores don't sell the Hot Dog blades. Instead they carry the Rigid and Husky. The Husky is about half the price of the Rigid. As far as I can tell, the main difference is that the Rigid has slits in the blade, but the Husky does not. I don't have any experience with either.

The Home Depot in our area keeps different blades in different sections too, so I have to look both in the tool section and the tile section depending on which blade I'm looking for. There is a different selection of blades in each section.

the hotdog blades are being discontinued at HD. Picked up 2, 7inch blades at 15 per, and 2, 10 inch at $26 last week, I had to hunt them down at 2 stores

I'll check my local HD to see if they have those closeout prices. That's cheaper than I find them on ebay.

Husband says HD has no plans to discontinue selling the Hot Dog blade. Was it the actual Hot Dog blade that you got for $15?? Home Depot is generally known for being tight with a buck, and being that they pay $25.80 for Hot Dog blades, I doubt they would take that kind of loss. Are you sure they weren't the Husky brand? They sell for about $17 normally. Home Depot generally works like this: Items go up for sale, after a while they are reduced. If they still don't sell, they may go for 40-50% off, but by then they end up being moved up to the overhead, out of the public view. They finally end up being marked down to .01 and usually that night are thrown into the trash compactor. Occasionally, some things are donated to Habitat for humanity, but not lately. Here's an example: HD has a Christmas tree lot in the parking lot. There were still quite a few trees left over Christmas Eve. Good trees, the expensive Noble Firs, etc, still wrapped in plastic! Trees that are USELESS on Christmas Day. Corporate was too cheap to send out Dumpsters to haul the trees away - stores were ordered to send them through the chipper and distribute them in the flowerbeds in the parking lot. It could be that east coast stores are not going to carry the Hot Dogs any more, but the west coast has no such plans.

I hear rumors of MK blades being fazed out because the company was sold.

Yes maam, they are HD blades. MK 225. I am in Idaho, and Husband picked one up in Washington, which is how I knew they were on clearance, so I checked the stores here in Boise. The rental guy was guite surprised to find this out himself when he checked the computer to see if any other stores had them. I found my receipt, (the 10 in blades were actually $28.00) but when I search HD by the sku they return no hits. HD shows they are selling the 8inch Hotdog, so maybe it is the SIZES they are discontinuing?
7inch Hrome Depot SKU # 092333788151. Maybe your DH can check using this number.

I was in one of my local HDs yesterday; they had 7 WF saws in stock. No HotDog blades to be found; tool rental guy thought he might be able to order them from Atlanta, but not discounted.

Husband says he still has 3 Hot Dog MK225 blades on the hook in the "Tool Rental" dept, still at $44.95 and still "Active" meaning he can still order them. He got in a shipment of 8 more WF saws, but on the computer it shows them as "in-active" meaning he cannot order them. The number that you give is a UPC #, not Home Depot's SKU. They are 6 digits. All I can say, Tarrastomp - I think you got a sweet deal! Nothing like that (or even close) here in Southern CA. $28 for any kind of 10" blade is a steal - just looking on HD web site tells you that, and I'd practically DRIVE to Boise to get 7" Hot Dogs for $15!
Good shopping! Turq

I may have scarfed up all that is left around here, but maybe I should look further! I "think" the guy at one of the HD's said there were several showing at the Ontario, OR. store.. not far from here, maybe 45 minutes. If they are there, I may be persuaded to take a drive.. OTOH, I may be heading to the Oregon coast next week, if so I will stop by anyway, cant hurt!

I'm like your hubby, terrastomp. I prefer the Hot Dog blade over the Rigid. Snap up all you can. It'll last him a while. I'd suggest that you could turn a profit if you sold them on eBay, but I would want them all for myself! Good luck on your further search -

This has been a really helpful thread. I just checked and our local HD is still selling the Work Force saw!
My hubby gave me my second WF for Christmas so I have one with the cheaper blade for coarse cutting my rocks and one with the finer kerf MK blade when I want to cut special slabs and/or shapes.
I love my Work Forces. I would hate to see them disappear from HD which is one of my favorite stores!

My HD here in Ga. sells another saw that is about the same price and is about the same, as best as I can tell. They sell Husky blades and HotDogs, and another brand they call a contractors tile blade over with the other tools... table saws, sawsalls, etc. And it is a bit thinner than the Husky. I expect if they stop with the WF they'll keep selling the other brand... and the blades. I got my 10 inch blade there for around 25 with tax, and it seems a good one. But that was before 5 buck diesel. I would expect the price is up now. Hey, Lady B.! If you see this send me a PM, please.... pretty please Tony

Remember, folks - Hubby said t5he WF was now "INACTIVE" - meaning he cannot order more. This could mean a few different things - the most probable one being a possible redesign or something. He feels that they will NOT discontinue them, they sell a lot of them - just that what is in the distribution centers is all there is. He just got in 8 of them. "Floor and Wall" is one of the departments that he is in charge of the inventory.

I've waited to see if the HD WorkForce tile saw would be discontinued/inactive at the Home Depot where I work. It is still active & is a very good seller. So I doubt they are going to actually get rid of a good money maker. Like Turk mentioned, they may just change something minor, but I think that they are here to stay. (I hope I'm right!) Don
