All
I would really like to build up a library of images of finished work on the main site.
I could never possibly tumble the amount of stone I would need to in order to achieve the range of images I envisage.
With this in mind would you guys help me to build the site along those lines, say a section for "Rock Types - Before and After".
And also further progress the "Visitor Kits" section - soon to be renamed "Chat Board Member Kits" or something like that.
I am trying to work out a way of doing it so that I offer up a prize of $200.00 USD to the poster of the best pic - but that would mean a vote and I can't really set that up techie wise.
The other option I thought of would be that every poster of images for the site (which get published - due to quality) library had their name put in a hat and pulled out at random to win the $200.
I don't see why you people should go to all the trouble they are doing for nothing - and I can splash out a bit here and there to help the forum grow which is great for everyone.
In summary - would it be a good idea to attract folk to the message board with a comp of some sort, which would benefit the main site in terms of content, and also hopefully get more rock hounds and tumblers into this forum.
Let me know. Andy.

Hi Andy,
I'm working on some before and after pictures right now. I't will be 2 plus months before they're ready to post.
I think you have some good ideas on attracting new members. I personally would feel guilty taking any prize money though. I'm just grateful for you having made this place for us. That in itself is a big enough prize for me. And I'm honored that you'd even be willing to take the time to publish my pictures.
Thanks again!
Cheers!

W ;DW ! That sounds very generous Andy and a big incentive to get some pics posted. Great idea! I think I might be having a Kodac moment in my shorts right now! Cheers, Don

Note to self: avoid asking donwrob how he keeps his camera warm. And because I'm a hopeless luddite (I'm actually only one step beyond taping little bags of rocks to my cats to tumble them) I'll never be able to post photos. But, if it keeps others posting pics like those yummy obsidian ones, I'm all for the offer of a prize.

instead of money, why not rough? It could be winners choice, or a 'grab bag" of sorts. Might as well feed the habit!

This is a good Idea. But I dont think you half to make a big $200.00 pot. I meen this site is all we need. We should help to make the site grow for free. This site is so great sometimes I think we should pay to use it.
Thanks for the site.

I feel that some rough rock and/or some tumbling grit would be a good prize maybe a couple of classes one for "experienced" tumblers and one for "newbies". Might as well fuel the fire.

I am guessing for Andy (in the UK) to ship grit to the majority of subscribers could be costly, cash you could use as and where you wish............but then like a lotof folk i do not feel you need to be giving wads of dough away like that mate, your forum seems to be going quite nicely. cheers

Totally Cool Idea!!!
My suggestion for a prize would be a gift certificate from one of the rock houses, such as Kingsley North. They may even be willing to sponsor the gig for a little promotion opportunity.
I'm limbering up the camera...
Thanks, Andy!

Well I think that competition is great, trying to reward a winner can be dicey depending on where that winner lives. I enjoy this site and benefit from the experience of many and don't need any added incentive to post pictures. I'll be sending some in as soon as I get the next batch out of the polish cycle. However if you want to reward someone why not a "Picture of the Month" competition!!
Just my thought. Again thanks to everyone on here for all the help.
Dorothy

a gift certificate from a company would be good, for them and easier on Andy's pocketbook, another thing I was thinking about while purusing ebay is this, get with one of the 'power' sellers on ebay, see if they will sponsor something like this competition, ask them to put a link to this site on their web page. I think if you talk to the right one they would be willing to do that, the more people who are impressed with thier generousity the more who will buy from them. Maybe even convince them to give a 10% discount to list members or free shipping on a member's first order or something along those lines, just a thought

Greetings All, I like the idea of a competition too, but $200 cash Goodness Andy, why not simply offer a new rock tumbler instead? Seriously, $200 is a huge prize, and you are already paying for maintaining the website and the message board anyway. As to contributing rough for a prize I'm willing to participate in this. When I get my big shipment from South Africa (hopefully in Febuary, but Gerdus is on vacation until latter in January so I won't have an update for at least another week, right now I don't think it has been loaded on the ship yet ) then I'll be happy to put up 5, 10, or even the occasional 20 lb lots as prizes. I can't say I'll pay for the shipping, but I'm very willing to donate some rough to help rocktumblinghobby.com keep growing. WilliamC

How long will to competition last? It usually take a few good months to get a good batch of rocks done.
As far as prizes go, I like the "Photo of the Month" idea. ;D

One more thing. There needs to be an easier way to post pictures rather than paying a $25 a year mebership with www.imageevent.com

Well I'm still thinking. but I must say that to be truthful I really cant ship stuff over to the US - it would just be a waste of money for all. Well on that front I CAN ship stuff over - but it would waste part of the prize if you see what I mean. I can write US Dollar cheques though (assuming that a US visitor wins) and obviosly a UK cheque is pretty much the same. I'll stand by a 200 USD amount as it aint too much trouble for all the info coming in is compared to. I like the ideas coming in of people doing rough/grit etc. towards the site, I have to consider that we dont want a bunch of new visitors only sticking around for a bit of a prize - rather than enjoying the conversation with people sharing the same interests, which is how things currently stand. I cant do a "best picture" comp as thats in the eye of the beholder, and there is no way on earth I am voting for one of you folk - when in my eyes all pics I get in are superb. Its a tricky one, but I aim to make some lucky visitor a bit of cash to get themselves a new tumbler or something. I reckon figuring this one out is all part of the fun of tumbling!!! I'm tumbling a few brain cells to get this off the ground - all inputs are well and truly listened to. In summary - shipping costs spoil me getting anything including equipment and/or rocks or consumables over to the US. A USD Cheque or a UK cheque is not a problem. I cannot warrant a "best pic" type of comp - as every image is superb anyway. So its an "out of the hat" type of comp, and either a quick agreement of support with a rock or kit provider/member of the board over there - or straight cash and hope the winner spends it on the hobby. The UK members - R:E: shipping - are in the same boat. Tick tock - the old grey matter is thinking aloud and waffling on!!! (but getting there ) Cheers all Andy.

John - (sandsman)
That sounds like a great idea for a bit of fun, we could run it alongside a comp which I provide the prize for.
I for one would certainly be up for a bit of a rock tumbling sweepstake lottery type thing - definately - just for a couple of squids or "bucks" every month or two.
What do others think about this kind of idea?
Andy.
