Steve... Yeah, there was a big rush, a bunch of people staked mining claims in the area....most of what they found was just common opal and white opal, with a few precious opals mixed in. Not nearly enough precious opal up there to make it cost effective to do a mining claim in the area. You would have to hunt such a vast area and put a lot of time in before you got a substantial amount of truly valuable material. Many of the claims are now abandoned, some are still active. I hound outside the active claims, and I never seem to see anybody else up there. It's not really worth the trip out there for me just to look for precious opal, but it's close to other rockhounding areas that have Cedar Rim Agates ( a beautiful ivory colored dendritic agate) and of course there is Jade in the area as well.... Roxy....yeah, Wyoming is a rockhounds paradise...

WOW The red agate is really cool, and the opal wood and precious opal? Man , makes me want to come out there. Nice stuff, thanks for posting those things common to your area, it is so interesting to read these posts and see all the interesting things around where everyone lives. Amber
