I was going through one of my wood piles and came across this. At first I thought it was a limb, then I looked again and the shape kind of looked like a bone. So I sawed the end off and now I'm more confused than ever. What do you guys think? Did I find my first bone? Curt

Dang Curt, that's really interesting. I was thinking a piece of fossil ivory too. Can't see any bone cell structure and it don't really look like wood either. Only thing is, I'd expect ivory to have a concentric layered structure....Mel

Hmmmm, don't know if we had any seals here a few million years ago, but we did have mammoths. What about a horn? I've found bison teeth here.

It could be polished but not easily. It's very porous.

I found this on the internet. Looks mighty similar to me. Ancient Walrus knuckle bone. These are nice and solid with mostly brown color inside. They are a not as solid in a small area in the center as you can see in the picture of the cut ends. Makes great knife handles and carving material.

Curt, you must have a magnet for amazing finds, no matter these are pet woods or bones!
