I was sorting through some bloodstone rough the other day and one piece definitely didn't belong. It is a tennis ball size chunk of what looks like darker pea-green obsidian. It has the usual pronounced conchoidal fracture, glassy sheen on broken surfaces, uinlike the bloodstone, which is more a waxy luster, and may have tiny flecks of white like pumice in it, just barely visible. The color is fairly homogenous. ANybody ever seen this stuff?? I'd post a pic, but my digital camera is not cooperating and my scanner doesn't show color too well.

I've seen green sheen obsidian that looks green when properly oriented to light (just like rainbow or other sheen types). There were posts on this site on green slag glass that were green no matter how they were oriented. Obsidian is volcanic glass so very similar to slag glass.

Beautiful stuff! My little piece ihas very little flow pattern and is pretty much a solid color of medium moss/pea green (no brpown or olive tones, much). Geez, I hate living in Florida. Nothing but sand, swamps, inaccessible caves and fossils (and those are hard to collect -I don't even know where to look locally). Guess I'll just have to keep importing stuff from all of you... Doc - sounds like you have slag glass rather than obsidian. Slag glass would have some flow patterns, but most importantly, it would be green rather than green when sliced/tilted correctly.

Sounds like green Obsidian to me, I believe that the Green material comes from the area around Burns Oregon. The mine was / is owned by Craig Ratzat. He has an on line store catering to the flint knapping crowd. He has many types of stone and also carries a material called ( Cherry Quartz ) which is made in China. I have some for knapping but it would also make some really neat cabs ! Clear with Cherry colored patterns in it . Use Green obsidian mine as a search .

Here is a piece of Green Obsidian that came from a 25lb piece from Davis Creek. The piece has no transparency and virtually no translucencey. This is what the outside looks like. Here is what the other side looks like. It is actually Rainbow Obsidian but the rainbow layers are all green. Here is a cab from it. Bob

It looks a lot like the chunk bobby1 is holding- I don't know what's inside, but I'm going to find out! I wish I could get pics to post. The material has black inclusions and one side is crusted with a thyolite-like material. i thought it might be glass, too, but the inclusions didn't make that likely (I forgot to mention the black pepperring in the material, and some larger spotys). I checked out the web sites and there seems to be a lot of couyterfeit green obsidian out there. I wouldn't risk buying this stuff on eBay now. Thanks for the great pics and I'll let you know what I find when I saw it.
