I know a place I can find limbcasts that were completely replaced by marcasite. Whe you dig them out of the ground the marcasite disintegrates to a powder leaving only a limonite shell. I found a great looking marcasite crystal nodule there one time, brought it home and put it on a shelf. About 2 months later I looked at it and it was a pile of powder. Curt

Curt: That's interesting. In California we had an agate from Nipomo that had marcasite inclusions. Really pretty stuff and most the time it cabs up real nice but every now and then, you'll cab one and set it aside to find later the marcasite has all rusted away to dust leaving pits etc. I guess the good ones have more silica enfolding and impregnating the marcasite to prevent rust. Hornitos Poppy Jasper also often has included marcasite or pyrite but it's apparently pretty high in gold content so it doesn't rust as badly....Mel

I am not a fan of marcasite anymore, that stuff can ruin a lot of things. i have one really nice specimen and it sits by itself in case it decides to become unstable later on, I've had it a year, so far its steady. Marcasite can destroy a lot, I was trying to polish some and the lid came off while I was gone, sent marcasite powder over the entire room. It destroyed any metal that was in the open, scissors, old singer sewing machine, everything.

Wow. I didn't know it could ruin things. I like your limbcast as is. Has character. Fran
