Howdy folks, Nice day yesterday so I decided to go for an extended hike and explore a part of the ranch I'd never hiked before. Parked my truck and went out but had to run back as the horses were getting to close and I didn't want my truck munched. Went and parked another spot and darned if I didn't hike right out from the car and discover a spot where the Amerinds had been quarrying and working flint. Never seen so many flint flakes in one small area and I picked up a bucketload of beautiful big straight flakes all ready for knapping practice. Also found a really nice knife about 4 1/2" long right were some guy had left it by a sitting down rock. Only missing a chip or too after all these years. Found an incredible tip that must have come from a real eyepopper of a knife too but just the tip. Anyway, here's a pic of the piece I found and a strange triangular knife or scraper that was worked a bit more crudely.....Mel

You find the coolest things on and around your property. Maybe that one that is crudely made was from a young boy learning how. Maybe the yound boy or girl was making that while the teacher was making the other. Probably not so but it's fun imagining while looking at the pic.

Excuse my ignorance but wouldn't most finds in a work area likely be discards of "oh crap that didn't flake quite right" or the point broke off or something? Maybe the crude one just wasn't cooperating so he tossed it and started a new one. So how big is your ranch?

john: You're exactly correct. All those flakes and not a single arrowhead. Mostly just worked or partly worked flakes, blanks etc and the one whole knife someone must've forgotten by his sitting rock. And I think the triangular one, he just gave up on because it wasn't chipping right. Ranch is about 3000 acres and is an association partnership. Unusual concept but it 's a terrific place to live....Mel
