JC,
Great lookin artifacts, especially the shells. We never find much in the way of organic tools up here, I suspect that the severe weather / temperature changes may cause them to break down at a faster rate then in moderate climates such as you have down there. Were those bone awls you posted pics. of ? I managed to find one made from native copper a few years back, also, a copper spear or maybe knife blade. almost threw that one away when I got to the fence row at the end of the field we were hunting in. I took one more look at it and most of the mud and dirt had fallen off the blade and the tang ( like a file has ) was clean and I finally saw what I had. I was standing in tall grass and when I let out a yell my buddy with me thought I had stepped on a rattler. I notice that a lot of your points have a tapered stem at the base, and very pronounced shoulders. We find a very similar blade up here that are called ( Durst Stemmed ) What do they call them down there ? The archeologists are giving us a dating of 3500 B.C. on these. Have you any info on your items there ? Those Awls really ring my bell !
Real nice finds.

thanks, presrvation is key with the bone or it will dry out and crumble. I use a mixture of 1 quart acetone to 1 tube a duco cement. mix both in a container and let my bones air dry wrapped in paper towels in a paper bage for a few days then put them in the solution and the acetone draws out the moisture and duco cements it throughout.

I live in a town ( plant city ) that is right next to the phosphate mines. As kids everyone was allowed to go out there and look for teeth and fossils but that has changed over the years. They will put you in jail for stepping on mine property. The peace river is always a hot spot thats about 30 minutes away and of course we have Venice beach. A friend paid his way through college selling his megs from there. I dont get excited about the teeth I guess because everyone I knew had them, they werent worth anything but now....thats a different story

shell beads that washed out of a small midden after a storm. Thats the best time to hit some of the coast in the county next to me.When the storms roll in from the west southwest is when you`ll find me and my buddy out there in the dark with flashlights and rain gear waiting for the high tide to roll out.

Wow, your collection looks like a museum! Very nice and interesting finds and it shows a lot of patiency and determination. I suppose you cannot find such things quick and easy.

you mean tell the professionals where I found these and what they are?? heck no, I`m not papered therefore anything I have, find or discover is no good. The state can bite my butt. I do have 1 real good friend who is an arch and I have shown him a couple of burial mounds I have discovered and have given him some nice incised or punctated pottery pieces he didnt have. We as amatuers don`t have regulations and funding problems, we dig wherever we can get permission. The bad thing about this hobby is there are alot of people in it for the money, not me.I`m all about the "rescue". It kills me to see peices of the past covered in concrete.
heres something for y`all to ponder, the state houses all these finds in a storgae, basement etc. the public will NEVER see these things they have. A few years back during a drought over 85 aboriginal canoes were discovered in Newnans lake in G-vill. What can you do with that many watercraft? they still sit at the bottom of the lake. no lie, I actually saw a box of artifacts that was donated to USF here in Tampa IN THE GARBAGE, no provenance, no site info so no good, thrown away. points tools, some fossils

So when do they use experts to Id things? Isn't that what experts are for? Did you rescue the box? It doesn't take a lot of brains to realize that these unlabelled treasures from the past would be great tools to generate interest of kids and ametures. Yup, instead of passing it on to others for free (how easy is that?) just throw it away.
Sorry, reading what they did kind of made me mad.
