Those are very pretty! Do you keep the tops flat to bring out the fire or are they domed? I can't tell with all the fire in them. Fran

I've heard of it before but never really seen any finished cabs. That stuff is way too garish. I think you need to send it all to me for proper disposal. ;D

I just picked up 2 strips of the fire Obsidian for ( HOLY CRAP ) $$ . They are 1 1/2 x 4 inches x just over 1/4 inch thick. I planned to flake a couple REALLY nice points out of them. I have been collecting unusual and neat pieces of material to make a display case of various types of Obsidian Artifacts. At the price that stuff is going for now. I don't think there will be many examples of that in my display. It is great eye candy but not for the faint of heart / billfold.

Awesome pieces! I have never seen any finished cabs of this stuff. I didn't know it had that multi-color chatoyance. Is it only visible when they're polished? I have two large unfinished slabs of it that I got from an old collection. I guess I better find them and get cutting...

I saw some of this in the rough a few weeks ago, this is some really cool stuff!! The fire layer in the ones I saw were very thin, but when you exposed the layer, WOW!!! If I do manage to bring some home I will post some pics.

Wow, is this a hundered per cent natural material? If so, it's at least as beautiful as precious opal. So, no wander about the high price.

Hey Folks... Wow many questions! I'll try to answer them all right now- Q - A. Yes actually these Cabs belong to Emory Coons. Emory is a great friend of mine and I have built a page on my website for him and have many cabs of this Fire Obsidian for sale for him. So if anyone needs finished cabs be sitting down and ask away!
Q - A - Yes this is 100% Real natural material. The only trick to this stuff is finding the right angle in the cab to take the picture! Emory and his father have tried to get the material passed through to qualify as a Precious Stone... However since it's "Obsidian" they won't pass it. You are exactly right... it compares to some of the finest black opals and it's stable!
Q - A - Each cab has it's own unique shape. What we do is take the rough material, run it through a tumbler for a day to clean the exterior. Then using a bright back light you look for the paper thin "often times golden colored band" in a sense you cut a stone such as you would fire agate... Try to get as close to the band without hitting it. It can be tricky material to cut... I know a few people who sent this over seas to the sweat shop cutters and that was a waste... they ruined so much rock!
Q - Highplainsdrifter ~ Awesome pieces! I have never seen any finished cabs of this stuff. I didn't know it had that multi-color chatoyance. Is it only visible when they're polished? A - What you see in the stone is what you get! Even in a raw cut slab you can see the color and pattern in this material, but of course polishing really finishes off the material. I will say the material does look much better in the photo's, as the photo is showing it's true color and pattern. When holding a cab in your hand is really has a directional pattern to it... which when orientated just right it gives you a "flash of color"
Q - Thom Tapp ~ I have never seen that material before. Where can you purchase it? Or can you? A - Unsure if Emory sells rough material or not... However if you need finished cabs for a custom project... just let me know and I can fix you right up The material comes from SE Oregon at Glass Butte's. If you search Fire Obsidian on the Internet, you'll find one company called "Dry Fire" they claim they own the mine this material comes from, but that's BS it was a long drawn out deal, but the final work from BLM is their claim boundry's were incorrect. Anything else you'd like to ask feel free to email, post, or pm away! Jason

Jason, Awesome stuff!! The trick is in the orientation and cutting or else it just becomes obsidian!!! What is it that gives it the color it shows...always wondered?? Larry
