*L* Ok, it's not that I've not been knapping. It's just I've been breaking all the good thin points and winding up with a bunch of thick crappy ones. I can definitely say that without heat treatment to make it more workable, flint sucks as a knapping material. All I've got to show for my last several sessions are several cuts, bruised thighs from the Ishi stick, sore arms,a couple of smashed fingers, a three gallon bucket full of chips and broken points and this bunch of junk. I'm going to take a break for awhile I think, to watch more videos and recoup before I go at it again. This is a very frustrating type of lapidary work!. Largest piece here is about five inches long....Mel

To my untrained eye they look great but you know your own work. A couple of weeks ago I felt the same frustration with the wrapping. I broke two cabs. I think it's the mind and body saying enough for now or not right now but I still think they look great.

They look good to me, also. If you need one I know where you can get a kiln for a good price, then you can heat treat your own.

Mel: I have seen, and found old points that looked a lot worse than these, so not all of the ancients were better. In my immediate area here in the Pacific Northwest, we find a lot of points made from basalt. Yours by comparison are absolutely beautiful. Woody

If that's your first attempt............ain't bad for raw rock. If you're getting "bruised thighs from the Ishi stick", you're doing something wrong.......most people just have it slip and slice their thigh open.......now, bruised thighs from boppers - that I can understand. A thicker leg pad helps.

They look pretty good to me Mel. I'm still thinking you must workout or something to even make a point from unheat treated flint.

Mel: I think they look really nice, it is just like cabbing, you get the shits of it and need a break, so take a little break and then go back to it, can you use something softer like obsidian? Man that stuff hurts when the pieces fly though, so be careful!!!!

I'd like to try this some day but I'm not sure I have enough patience for this. You apparently do. I've heard that the heat treating really helps but that seems like a lot of work too. These look pretty good to me.

*L* Knapping is fast work compared to tumbling or cabbing. Kind of instant gratification which is what makes it kind of fun to do....Mel
